What's your opinion of multiple ear piercings?

eatwelb...@aol.com (EatWelBWel)
Not cartilage piercing, just extra holes in lobes. I'm striving for a more
classic, grown up look (I'm over 45) and currently have two holes in one ear
and three in another. Used to wear tiny studs in the uppers and "real" earrings
in the "main" piercings. Recently I've been toying with letting the upper holes
close up and just wearing one earring in each ear. I'm wondering if any other
afers of a certain age have made that transition. Not an age issue, but in my
opinion, a more elegant one, for want of a better word.

and a bigger silver hoop in the first hole (but they're both pretty small
hoops).

Multiple earrings certainly increase the "bohemian" or "funky" factor, and
that can be a good thing at the right time, but there's no reason you have
to have all or none. Why not simply wear multiples when they're appropriate
and wear singles when you want a more traditional/elegant look?

If you've had all these piercings for quite some time the holes don't tend
to close up and if they do, it usually takes a very long time so you can
always go back to wearing your studs.
IMHO a single piercing in each lobe is 'classic & elegant'.

Of course, I have one in my brow as well!

::shrugs:: I'm 20, two holes in each ear, then one in the left cartilage.
My mom has the same set up, and she's 54. It all depends on what you wear
for your earrings. I mean, if you're wearing crazy earrings all the time,
then maybe you ought to consider switching to hoops or studs or pearls. I
mean, I adore my strange earrings, but they're not always appropriate.
However, I don't think you ought to let them close up, even if they can.
Just don't wear two pairs of earrings.
I don't see the point really, in letting earring holes close up. Facial
stuff, maybe, but I know when I'm a grandmother and I can still wear
feathers and my fave rose gold hoops with the silver hoop up top, I'll be
proud to do it.

I think you have summed this up pretty well. I never went for the
multiple lobe piercings. I see a lot of gals who look like a walking

I'm 53 – I also have 2 holes in one ear and 3 in the other. I wear
tiny white gold and diamond hoops in the back hole(s) – they don't
come out from day to day. I change the earrings in the front hole
daily – usually another (larger) pair of white gold and diamond
earrings. Seems elegant enough to me. For my recent wedding, I took
out the smaller hoops and wore only 1 pair – a larger diamond
earring in the front hole only.

Honestly, I think it all depends on your features, and is less an age
thing. For example I am 39 years old, have tiny ears, a short neck, and
there's nothing about my facial features that could carry off multiple
ear piercings no matter *what* my age! I think I would look ridiculous.
I also do not have the features to carry off a nose or eyebrow
piercing. Heck, only the smallest hoops look good on my ears.
IMO, certain people can do it and do it quite well, no matter what
their age. My DD11, for example, has gorgeous eyes and a high forehead,
and I could see how someday she might opt for a tiny diamond stud in
her eyebrow. It would work well on her. Of course I don't tell her
this, because I don't want her getting any ideas while she's a
teenager, and body piercings or tattoos IMO should be an individual
decision made when one is an adult.
If you have striking features – a long neck, pretty ears, defined
cheekbones, high forehead – and those features aren't changing with age
– I say keep your piercings because you probably carry them quite well.
If you've had your holes for a long time, chances are you can get away
with going without the upper earrings on those occasions when you want
a more elegant look, without risking them closing up, so you still have
the option of wearing the multiple earrings on those occasions when you
want a more funky look. Options are good!

Sandra, I, too am a tad <smile> over 45 and decided last winter to do just what
you describe. I had double piercings in each ear; got the first set when I was
15 and the second at 25. Felt like I was done with that look and am now
amassing a collection of semiprecious gemstone large–ish studs in various
colors. One of these in each ear feels just right to me now.
More elegant is how I think of it, same as you.

I'm going through this right now as well. 40 this year but mine has less
to do with age and more with inattention. I have a 3 year old and a 1 year
old and this last year has been full. Sometimes I've barely had time to
shower. My 2nd and 3rd holes were done about 20 years ago and I haven't put
small diamonds studs into those 4 holes in about a year. Surprisingly, I
think they are growing up and when I think about it, I'm not all that upset.
I'd fought to keep them through a couple of jobs that thought they could be
overkill but I was intent on proving to them that it could be tasteful and
attractive; and I did. I'm just finding that it doesn't horrify me to be
found wearing only one pair of earrings now. It's a strange thing to find
that your tastes and wants have made transitions without you necessarily
realizing it, isn't it?

I'm 34 and I have the exact same set up as you – 3 in one and 2 in the
other. I wear half carat diamond studs in the first hole daily – only
take them out to clean every few days. I have smaller (.25 tcw) studs
that I occasionally put in the 2nd holes, but by occasionally I mean
very seldom, like maybe once a month if that. I have long hair that I
usually wear down so I might add the 2nd set if I knew I was having an
updo day or something. I haven't worn the 3rd hole in forever but as
far as I know it's still open. I don't think mine will ever close.
I think the elegance factor weighs mostly on what earrings you wear.
But right behind that thought is that the more you wear the less
classic and elegant you *could* look – keeping other factors in mind
– what you are wearing, hairstyle, etc.
For me it's more of a laziness/comfort factor than anything. I find
studs in any other hole than my first one uncomfortable to sleep in
and to put them in and out every day can sometimes require too much
time/energy. Small hoops would be more comfortable to sleep in but I
don't think I have any at the moment.

I have three holes in each lobe and feel like I'm perfectly elegant.
I do pay quite a bit of attention to coordinating my earrings, though;
for example, I often wear a "suite" of emerald and white gold
earrings––3 mm studs for the top holes, big chunky posts for the
center holes, and 5 mm studs for the bottom holes.
As a fancy evening look, I like a .25 ct diamond and white gold stud
in the top holes, diamond–and–white–gold huggies in the center holes,
and .25 ct diamond with white gold flourishes posts in the bottom
holes.
For day wear, I like to wear small, coordinating gemstone studs with
white gold hoops in the center holes, or perhaps three sets of small
turquoise and silver studs. My husband's favorite informal daytime
earrings of mine are a coordinated set of amber and silver bezel–set
studs in cherry, gold, and green amber. I also like mixing white and
black pearls, and pearl studs and diamonds.
I'm 40 and can't imagine going to one hole per lobe, ever. This way,
I can always choose to wear one big earring per ear when I feel like
it, and three funky ones when I feel like it.
Another argument for multiple holes for women over 30 is that you can
get a lot more sparkle that way without having any one earring be so
heavy that you get that dragged–down lobe look, which is the essence
of unattractive for me.

I let my second holes close up when I was about 26 y.o.a. and I'm 33 now. It
just seemed like it was time and that I was done wearing the little studs in
the second holes. On women with extremely long hair (mine is long, but not
all down my back or anything) two holes looks kind of cool to me, especially
with silver hoops and a diamond in both of the second holes.
With shorter, straight hair (and I mean earlobe length bob length and
shorter, not shoulder length) two holes is alright, but MORE THAN TWO holes
in each ear around these parts means you're definitely either a lesbian or
else are are a severe tomboy who wears flannel shirts and big boots all of

Multiple holes with poofy, short curly hair isn't too taboo around here.
Lots of women do that or do the small nose ring. I can't STAND noserings,

Ummm no. My second holes closed up in about five months, which is honestly a
relatively short period of time seeing as how I'd had the second holes for
well over a decade. The one on the right closed up a little before the left
one did and the method of piercing was by a nurse in a doctor's office with
a plastic ear gun.

Interesting. Around my area, I see a lot of mature women (50s–60s)

I will be age 49 at the end of this month and also have multiple piercings. I
have 3 holes in each ear and just got the last one done only 2 years ago. I
also have one cartilage piercing.
Like you, I recently decided to close all but two holes on each ear and have
actually only been wearing one earring in each for months now . My reasons
were (in no particular order): my age, laziness of not wanting to pick out so
many earrings daily, tired of the multiple piercing look, and the fact that my
hair mostly covers my ears now anyway. The only drawback to the decision is
that I have a drawer full of earrings and I tend to wear the same ones most of
the time.
I also had my hair cut last month that I been growing long for the past year.
I think it's just that time in my life now. On the other hand, a friend of
mine got second holes in her ears at age 75. So it's really just a matter of
how you feel and what you like.

i have 4 holes in one lobe, one hole in the other lobe. i don't think it's
particularly elegant or grown–up or whatever, but they're 'me', and most were
done with friends (diy holes with a shared pair of earrings), so they're
slightly sentimental rather than a style issue. i suppose i'd take them out if
someday i felt the need to, but i'm not in any sort of conservative or 'mature'
career where they feel wrong. fwiw, i rarely change earrings, and usually have
small silver beads or small gold or silver hoops in all the holes.

I'm turning 37 next month and I wear 4 earrings in my left ear and one
in my right (I have that one double–pierced but the 2nd hole is not
even with the other side). I wear, from the bottom:
* the earrings of the day on both sides
* small gold hoop
* smalll diamond stud
* small gold CBR in cartilage
I also wear a small diamond stud in my nose. IMO, wear what you feel
comfortable with. I don't think my multiple earrings are out there and
I dress up quite often these days. I do make sure to wear small CZ
studs in the bottom holes for nice occasions to avoid overdoing it.

I had two traditional ear piercings for years, then got one more in
the left lobe. It's fun! One of my favorite casual combos is diamond
studs in the main holes, and a silver skull–and–crossed–bones (like
the classic pirate symbol) in the third one. People sometimes say,
"oh, it's a cute little flower you have the–– wait, it's Not a

I don't think I'll be getting more piercings, though. The third one,
for me, just lets you add a little extra something if you feel like
it. And besides, my ears are quite small :)

Not cartilage piercing, just extra holes in lobes. I'm striving for a more
classic, grown up look (I'm over 45) and currently have two holes in one ear

in the "main" piercings. Recently I've been toying with letting the upper holes
close up and just wearing one earring in each ear. I'm wondering if any other
afers of a certain age have made that transition. Not an age issue, but in my
opinion, a more elegant one, for want of a better word.

I was just thinking about the same issue last week before your post. I
have 4 holes – 3 lobe & 1cartilage piercing (which I have abandoned –
keep getting a comb / brush caught in the ring) ) in my left and 3 in
my right lobe. For everyday, I wear a .25 diamond in the lower, a
..15 diamond in the mid and .10 diamond in the upper, which it seems
like I have done forever. Last week I tried wearing only one pair
and feel totally naked !
Looks like I wont be going to a single pair soon!

I'm 32, and not what most would call conservative..... yet I only have
one set of holes in my lobes and a helix (upper cartilage) piercing. I
like the way it looks because I put a small stud in the top hole and
whatever I please in the lobes. For some reason it doesn't look (to
me) as.... well, GAUDY as multiple holes in the lobes would, on me at
least.
I like this combination as I consider it flexible enough to have a
little bit of edge, while still being pretty much classic. YMMV.
(And, yes, I'm one of those fence–sitters who made sure her tattoo
could be easily covered, too)

BTD: My 1st lover pierced my left ear when I was 14 and set it further back
than normal. A few years ago I had the other side done in the same manner.
So now I'm going to have another set in the proper position but haven't
gotten around to it yet because it's kind of a pain in the ass keeping it
sterile, &c.
I like the chains and rhinestones draped between studs and will probably do
that eventually
