Recs for hotels/shopping in London needed

A friend and I are visiting London in February and are looking for a
moderately priced hotel, preferably in a good area. We are most
interested in shopping and going out in the evening? Any recs on
hotels or shops to visit?

priced, and Ealing(W5) is definately a good area, and is a shortish
bus/tube ride from the West End.
