kinda OT: need some costume advice from Star Trek fans

Melissa <mka...@cmu.edu>
Good morning,
SO and I attend a theme party every year for Halloween. This year's
theme is "Escape to Space". I don't have a lot of time to work on a
costume this year (last year I spent a ton of time on a Poison Ivy
costume) and a friend suggested that I go as the unnamed crew member
from Star Trek that inevitably dies when going out on a mission. I'm
thinking I could probably dress in Star Trek clothes and then do some
cool things with blood and wounds. My question is this – what all is
involved in the costume? red, blue, or yellow shirt? Are black pants and
boots ok? are the tips you can buy for your ears appropriate for this
character? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also, if you have any
easy ideas for another space related costume they would be much appreciated.
Thank you!
:) Melissa

Security officers in the classic series wore red shirts. Pants and
boots are fine. Blood and wounds are not necessary because red shirts
tended to die from various forms of disintegration or other woundless
death.
Perhaps you could carry a placard that says: Dr. McCoy just tell Jim
I'm dead already and get it over with" or "I'm gonna die, we all know
it." "Expendable crewmember #214".
Security officers in the original series were human so you don't have
to worry about the ears unless you want to be a Vulcan.
You should try to get a phaser prop if possible. security officers
carry them. You could also try other props like a wooden cube/box
spray painted some "spacey" color. You can then say, "This is my
buddy, he/she got turned into this cube by some angry space god and
you know I'm going to be next."
Security officers in The Next Generation and series later in the
timeline wore the gold shirts and had longer life expectancies, not as
much fun.

"He's dead, Jim." Dr. McCoy on occasions too numerous to mention.

Red shirt, I think. No Vulcan ears––the disposable crew members are
always human. Black pants and boots are right.
Try the Star Trek Costume Guide for suggestions:

I think that Star Trek is the easiest space costume, frankly. Though
it would be fun to go as Vampirella and Bela Lugosi in "Plan 9 From
Outer Space".

expendable crew member #214 would be very funny
and actually black cropped pants and boots would fill the bill

Big thanks to all for the suggestions! I'll definitely be taking the
advice :)

Put on a cheap wig like Shatner.

This is soooo uncool of me...
<snip>
I say burn a hole in shirt, or just smudge it with black. That would look
like a wound from the weapons of the show. Ensign Expendables often die
gory deaths, too. So, if you want to have fun with blood –go for it!

It's the red shirt that *always* dies.

Perfect. Especially for the original series.
<snip>
Are the tips you can buy for your ears appropriate for this character?
<snip>
Sure. That just makes you a Vulcan casualty. There are plenty of Vulcan in
Star Fleet.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Due to short notice on a sci–fi themed party, I wore a tin – foil hat to
protect me from alien mind probes. It actually went over very well. My
Friendly Martian is just 50's style clothing with antennas coming out of
your head. There's the whole Stargate phenomenon. You could wear whatever
you want, just doodle one of the insignia on your forehead:

My suggestions:
Black pants – straight leg, made from a knit–type material.
Shirts – Like a mustardy color, or light blue, or red (closer to
burgundy) L/S, also knit material with a mandarin style collar.
I would suggest you glue on some runes in the collar to signify rank.
You could probably draw the con badge on cardboard, color it
appropriately and glue/pin it to the shirt.
That's prety much it. You don't need ear tips unless you want to go
as a Vulcan. It would be fun if you could get something that looks
like a phaser.
A bulkish/longuish PDA could double for one of the scanners the doctor
uses.

PS: Perhaps it could be easier to go as a Jedi?

you might also try crossposting / asking over on rec.arts.sf.fandom... before
reading the rest of this thread, my first thought is to imitate a first
generation "Original" Star Trek 'red shirt' crewman by using a red shirt with a
black collar, an insignia patch in the appropriate place, and –– a bullseye. :)
Have fun!
and live long and prosper. even though you're gonna dress like a crewman who's
gonna bite it. :)
