Anyone ever been to Prague?

annecat.dont.s...@no.spam.bredband.net (Anne Ehrenholm)
Hi everyone!! I haven't posted in a while, but have been looking in every now
and then. I'm home from work today, since I had a wisdoom tooth extracted
yesterday.. ouch! Thank goodness for (very strong) painkillers...
Anyway. My fiance's employer decided that they should have a bonus trip to
Prague, and if I just paid my flight ticked, I'd be wecome too! So, we're
going from Thursday 28th, through Sunday 31st. Has anyone been there? What to
do, what to see, what to buy? :) I'd love some ideas!
On the kittie front, we are probably expecting small ones in about five weeks.
:) Not completely sure yet.

My son was in Sweden for two years and took a side trip to Prague, among many
others. Prague ended up being his favorite trip of all – said it was without a
doubt the most beautiful place he had ever seen. The photos he brought home
were amazing. Based on his experience, don't pass it up!!

Prague is terrific and the dollar went a long way ( when I was there a few
years ago). THe city is like a fairytail village..lots of crystal and
shops....the Jewish section is fascinating...watch your purse when you are near
the castle as there are pick pockets...a very walkable town ..everyone speaks
English!

Hi! Yup, went last May (2003).
As with any tourist town, once you get there you will be bombarded
with tours and sightseeing opportunities. We did a half day tour (to
a castle? church? both?) that included a short cruise up and down
the river. I think we did all of the usual stuff – the (st. charles?)
bridge, the main square, etc. I'm horrible w/ names so I can't
remember what everything was called. We were only there 2 days and
half of one was spent sleeping since we were still very tired after
taking the night train in.
I think the only thing we bought were some prints – really vibrant,
colorful, somewhat cartoon–ish pictures of Prague. We thought they
were unique until our trip over the bridge where there were many
"artisans" selling the same exact pictures. Oh well, we still like
them. I didn't do any girly shopping because our time was short. I
do remember walking into a shoe store or two, but nothing notable.
Prague is beautiful with a ton of history, but I was not all that
impressed with the people. We had come from Munich and we both felt
that it had been much friendlier there. We did not feel overly
"welcome" in Prague. I have heard many other people say the opposite
though. We went to Prague because of all of the wonderful
recommendations we had heard so maybe our experience was unique.
Sorry I don't have anything specific to recommend – like I say above,
you will be offered all sorts of tours and trips that you can pick and
choose according to your budget and timeframe. Our specific tour was
definitely not good enough to recommend to you even if I could
remember the name.
Oh, I do remember one place we had dinner – it was in the main square
area and it was up on a rooftop. Probably 6 stories up. Great view
and great food. I remember they had pictures of all of the dishes.
Ugh, I should really just delete this entire post because I'm so
entirely useless w/ names. If you want to see any of our PICTURES of
the places we went, I'd be happy to email them to you :) (The
funniest one being of my boyfriend with a Prague hooker that we saw
working outside a bar we stopped into. We paid her for a picture and
she even flashed us a boob. Hilarious!! We call her the
praguestitute. Oy, the things I DO remember...)
Have a wonderful time!!

Prague is gorgeous but the food is really REALLY bad. The beer is cheap and
fantastic. Pastries are also great. I remember eating Chicken McNuggets at
McDonalds (which I loathe and never visit except in Prague) next to the
Hilton, drinking beer at the local bar and munching on pastries.

When I went several years ago, crystal and semiprecious gems were the major
things to buy. They had gorgeous crystal cordials that I still regret not
purchasing. We also saw some lovely decorated hollow spheres (were they
eggs? I forget...), but we didn't want to carry them around (we were at the
beginning of a 4wk trip).

Thank you all so much! Sounds like I'll enjoy all the beautiful buildings,
check out the crystal, watch out for pickpockets and bad food, and have lots
of beer. :) (Not much of a beerdrinker, but I'll try to make an effort.)
It'll be a fun little weekend trip – I'm glad I get the opportunity!

Yup, been there. Gorgeous old city. Check out St. Vitus's cathedral, main
square, astrological clock, St. Charles bridge, the crystal, and garnets.
Have fun!

I went about 7 years ago, when I was in college, and loved Prague.
It's so old, and the architecture so different from the other big
European cities. There's also a lot of mystical history, which is
really interesting to me. You have to see the clock in the
square––it's really cute and puts on a performance every hour. Also,
the Jewish cemetery was interesting. I agree with whomever said the
food was bad. I found a place that served crepes though, and ate a
lot of dessert crepes. Also ate at Planet Hollywood a lot, as
terrible as that sounds. I think by that time in my travels, I was
craving "American" food. I think if you're a vegetarian, it would be
hard to eat in Prague, it seems like everything has meat––not just
meat, but a lot of wild game. One thing I did partake in was a "black
light theatre." I remember seeing a lot of brochures around for
different shows and thinking it would be a cool little cultural thing
to see. It was the most boring hour and a half of my life. I chose a
show about the Golem, because it seemed interesting, but it was the
most surreal, strange bit of performance art that I've ever seen. I
suffered through an hour and a half, and when the lights came up I
assumed the show was over. As I was walking out, an usher told me the
show wasn't over, turns out it was intermission! I didn't go back.
So avoid the black light shows, if they're even still popular.

They are still there – I do remember seeing them now that you mention
it. I'm glad we didn't waste our time. My BF is not exactly a
"theater" type of guy so they weren't really much of an option.
And I agree mostly with what's been said about the food, some of it is
scary although that place I mentioned we had dinner was pretty normal.
