orange jacket and orange purse?

snow...@gmail.com (Snowbie)
I got a nice leather purse for a good deal. Since it was orange, I
thought I should get a orange leather jacket to go with it. I'm not
sure if the two combined are too much though. I just got the jacket
and am debating returning it for either a black or brown. Would one go
better than the other or should I stick with the orange?

Well, I'm not the orange purse type, but if I were, I would definitely go with
the brown leather jacket. Black and orange is too "Halloween" looking, and an
orange leather jacket is too much.
YMMV,

I love orange and brown together. I like the look of one object making a
dramatic "statement" or focal point of an outfit.
YMMV,

Definitely choose a brown jacket. It is far more versatile. You could
always add an orange scarf if you want more orange accents.

I think you'll receive tons of compliments on an orange bag. My bright lime
green faux dior bag gets compliments everywhere I go. I hesitate to move into
a black or brown bag for fall because this green one is such a hit! (but it's
a bit small and I'm ready for a big mock croc bag for all my junque.
Oh, and I'd go with the brown coat.

Yup – I would go with a brown coat too. By orange, I'm assuming the OP
means "pumpkin" or "autumn orange" and not safety orange. :–)
With my lime green moc–croc, I wear a pink coat. I was dubious about
the colors together, but my very fashionable girlfriend insisted it
worked well together because the tone of the pink and the green are
similar (the pink is a lucious muted shade, not too bright, with blue
undertones). I keep the rest of the outfit neutral. My skin color is
cool, so it's been a bit of a challenge this year doing the color
mixing thing since most of the colors seem to me to be in the warm
family.
I think the goal with the color thing this year isn't to have colors
all match, but mix–and–match. It works and you can even press the
envelope and have coat, purse, and shoes all in different colors, as
long as the colors are in the same tone. Because the goal is
mix–and–match, I would steer clear of a coat in the same orange color.
It's not the look you want this year.
If you want to get more adventuresome, alternatives to the basic brown
or black coat, depending on the tone of the orange purse, could be a
wool coat in winter white, one of the new goldish yellow coats BR just
came out with this week, something with a leopard print (ooh, that
would be lovely!), or a fur capelet in the same color as the model is
wearing on the BR home page. A tan suede would also work, I think.

Thanks for all your input. You all confirmed what I suspected – a
brown jacket would go best. I wish I would've posted before buying the
orange jacket; making returns are a pain!

Since it sounds like you're really attracted to orange leather, I'd
suggest that you keep for the orange jacket and find another color bag.
If you like it and it makes you happy, wear it. Non–utilitarian leather
makes a statement inherently; never mind the biddies who claim that a
dark neutral is more tasteful or classic, that's not why one wears
leather in the first place.

Remember when the GAP had those puffy vests a few years ago? DD wanted
the orange one, the hot color at the time. After her first wearing she
felt like she should be directing road traffic when she wore it. It
just isn't a versatile color. Orange is great for sweaters, tees,
shirts and accessories but color combinations are limited. I bought an
orange outfit this summer but I always wore the three pieces together.

University of Texas El Paso has orange and black as its colors. I'm
sure lots of other schools do too.

I got the orange suede barrel bag from the Isabella Bird catologue– it's a
gorgeous pumpkin color and a wonderful bag! It looks great with brown(more
so than black to answer your question) and wine, but the best combination
I've found is Olive Green. This combo just does it for me. And now that
the matchy matchy thing isn't the trend now, this is easy to pull off.
Matching orange shades can be tricky as I have a bright orange watch that is
just too primary to wear with the bag– my dark green mock croc watch looks
much better. I am loving being able to wear the orange bag, brown boots,
olive shirt, sweater or jacket and have it still look pulled together just
because the color combo is so pleasing. My small amber earrings and orange
citrine briolette necklace pull the orange in. In summary, I would just use
other accessories to bring in the orange and use complimentary colors like
brown or olive for your major clothing pieces.
