Washing bath towels w/cleaning rags? Any risk?

Robin <robinx...@yahoo.com>
I haven't done this (yet), but I'm trying to simply life. Aside from
the gross factor, is there really any reason not to if you're washing
and rinsing with hot water and Tide or Tide like detergent? Afterall, I
would want the rags to be as clean as the towels before using them to
clean my home. (rags not used IN toilet – but on lids, seats, base, as
well as floors, windows, mirrors, doors, and for dusting)

i throw everything in the wash together, unless i have a bunch of cleaning rags
that would be enough for one load.
when i'm cleaning my ferrets blankets and carpeting tho, those go in by
themselves:)

I wash stuff like that together. Never had a problem.

Ditto – in fact that's what is in my washing machine right now.

I wash them separately, but only because when I turn my water on the warm
setting in the machine, it's really not that warm. If I washed in the hot
setting all of the time, I'd throw all the towels in together without any
qualms.

Same here.

I made the mistake of throwing the catbeds in with the towels once a
couple months ago, and I had to rewash all the towels to get rid of the
cathair. Yuck! Now, those get washed separately. :)

I don't do it. I throw the cleaning rags in the washer just before my
husband does his own clothes (heh :) I'm sure it's fine, though. I just
tend to be overly hygiene–conscious when it comes to things that may be
touching my private parts. I won't take a bath in an apartment for at
least a few months after I've lived there, figuring that by that time,
any germs there will be mine and not someone else's.

I wouldn't mix them. My cleaning rags get washed with my dog laundry,
which is plentiful: towels for drying dogs on wet days, blankets and rugs
that go in crates, the throws I use on the couch and bed when I'm not
home so the dogs can roll to their hearts' content, all of my area rugs
that eventually get dirty and hairy.

It depends on what type of product is on the rags. If I used them just
to dust I may put them in with towels, but if they have strong scented
products on them I prefer to do them separately even if it is just a
small load. It's because I usually use hot water on the rags and not on
the towels.

That is also what I do, in case the products have an effect on colors.

I thought I was the only one who thought about that! I now throw them all in
together...hot water...unless the rags have a strongly smelling cleaning
solution, then I was them alone. I do all my towels and washcloths in hot
water. I'd rather have them as clean as possible over keeping colors bright.

I'm the same way – I've always washed towels and washclothes in hot water and
any cleaning rags I use go in with them, except for the ones I use to clean my
car. Those have oil and Armorall and such on them and I worry that it'll get
on the towels. My regular cleaning rags only have stuff like Windex, 409,
Scrubbing Bubbles and such on them.

I wash rags separately because I've found the cleaning solutions I use
don't wash out all that well, even in hot water. I use rags primarily
to clean my kitchen, which requires marble polish, stainless steel
cleaner, and a special smooth cooktop cleaning solution. (A pain in
the butt to have to drag out all these different cleaners, but the
kitchen is beautiful so I don't mind all that much!)
The rags retain the odor of those solutions, and if I wash them with
towels, the towels pick up the odor too. I've learned the hard way to
wash them separately, even if it's a small load. Although often I will
throw them in with DF's dirty greasy gardening clothes.
As for cleaning the bathroom, I rely on Glass Plus Wipes. Love them –
they leave the sink shiny and you can throw them away!

We will wash the towels we use after a dip in the hot tub with the
cleaning rags (cotton diapers). Sometimes the house cleaner uses enough
rags that they warrant their own load. I'm not worried about
contamination or anything like that (she uses a vinegar solution). The
good bath towels get washed separately because I don't like to mix
colors. All in hot water with a warm rinse.

Not something I'd do (admitted clean freak), but each to her own.
