Skin Lightener

rhianno...@att.net (Racine)
Hello,
I have this brown spot on the side of my cheek that's driving me
crazy.
So, I finally bought PTR's "Skin Lightening Gel Complex" serum with
2% hydroquinone and have been using it for about a month. I don't see
any improvement. It costs $50 and I'm none too pleased. Can anyone
recommend a good skin lightener that's good for lightening the skin
and getting rid of age spots? Has anyone tried the Clarins Skin
Brightener? Does it work?
Thanks!

All of the Glytone products are great, IMO. I used to buy them from my
dermatologist, but they are actually cheaper (even with shipping) from
Dermstore.

Not a huge fan of PTR products myself, you might want to check out
mdskincare or therapy systems..... I know those are pretty darn close to rx
products but what you need is probably some rx strength hydroquinone

I have used the DDF Fade Gel with excellent results. They also make a Fade
cream with SPF 15.

Hello,
I tried lots of different products as well but found success with
a.f's ami ko suggestion– Kose medicated Sekkesi night cream on
strawberry.net. It's the bomb, and I actually peeled off two largish
freckles after a few months! The face overall has lightened too, but
getting rid of the melasma spots was great.
I am still owrking on a large spot on my forehead, so I had to get a
2nd jar, but ami used one and she was done.
Good luck,
Moe

THanks. I just tried that website and I don't think that's correct.

I've only used whitening products to get rid of post–pimple spots and
overall lightening. I've had great success with 2 of the most popular
whitening lines: Kose *Medicated* Sekkisei lotion (toner, to Americans) and
Lancome Blanc Expert XW spot corrector (slim tube). I find the spot
corrector to be quite drying and use it sparingly. Since Moe has had
success with the Kose Medicated Sekkisei night cream, I suggest trying that
first.

Did any of you see the program in National Geographic about skin?
It talked about skin lighteners and how bad (no, make that plain
dangerous) they are.

I didn't see the program; perhaps others didn't, either. Could
you tell us why skin lighteners are dangerous – or give us the
URL of a website the program mentioned, or something?? Now,
I'm quite concerned, though I'm only using a lightener on hand
and arm freckles....

I couldn't find a transcript of the entire program but this link has
more information. The program was transmitted through PBS in the NY
area yesterday.

In the program, in talking about skin they talk about how in Africa
skin lighteners are commonly used––because of the obvious
socio/economic reasons. They showed after photos of people and the
photos were quite shocking. Apparently prolongued used of these
products produces dark spots. If your skin is fair and you're trying
to lighten freckles, the effects may not apply in your case?...but you
may want to read more about it.

When I tried to buy a lightener at Sephora, the sales lady asked if I
was pregnant. I think there's an active ingredient in most lighteners
that may cause harm to the fetus if you are pregnant.

The only quote that I could find on the webpg that related to skin
lighteners was "Skin lighteners can suppress the melanin production that
safeguards skin, but sometimes, the skin fights back with a hyper–production
of melanin, causing skin stains." In Asia, some women complain that skin
lighteners have made their skin ultra–super–dry –– my Chinese grandmother is
anti–whitening b/c she's convinced that it isn't good for the skin in the
long term.
I use the Kose Medicated Sekkisei lotion sporadically, the Lancome spot
remover as needed, and my L'oreal whitening cleansing foam daily. I feel
that the "whitening" part of the cleansing foam is negligible since it's
washed off in 60sec or less –– it's just a good cleanser for my skin. Also,
I use sunscreen religiously to prevent melanin stimulation.
That said, I don't think that you should use whiteners randomly and should
always always use at least spf 30.

Thanks, Maria. I think I'll give my de–freckle routine a few
month's vacation, while continuing to liberally apply SPF50. :)
