What is the impressiveness quotient of...

....Bottega Veneta?
I have a wallet/keycase set and a briefcase from Bottega Veneta. While shopping
this long weekend I ran into a BV boutique and saw a handbag which I thought
would make a great gift, but would it still be (subjectively) so if the giftee
has no idea what BV *is*?

Personally, I think it's a cult Italian brand. Love the cache of it and I
would certainly appreciate it. what others would think .. no idea!

IMO BV is beyond being a cult brand. I think it is for those who really
appreciate quality way beyond logos and the usual brands. BV makes
handbags out of the most petable leather, but if you think the giftee
would prefer a Gucci or Louis Vuitton, let's make a deal :)

I missed Joes post for some reason but I would give the limbs of several of
my relatives (and my own) to own a BV "anything"

Well, yes, if the person has an eye and appreciation for quality.

I think so! BV makes great stuff, whether you've heard of them or not.

Even if one doesn't know the Bottega Veneta brand (I hadn't heard of
it before you asked this question), they would probably be aware of
high–quality raw materials and manufacturing craft.
I don't have to look up the price to figure out a car with too much
plastic trim and exposed screwheads in the doors isn't a luxury car.

Thanks to everyone for the input. I added that item to my haul today and
apparently REALLY made some SA's day.
As an aside, I really got a kick out of how discreetly theymark their clearance
table...way off in a cornerwitha teeny, tiny hand–calligraphed card that reads
"Special Value."

How about making a print of your post and leave it in a strategic spot
sure for Santa to see?

I think it's very impressive but definitely one of the underappreciated
brands here in the US. I almost bought a BV in Italy years ago and still
regret it because their typical items are very classic (though in the 90's
all the trashy/grunge looks make BV seem a little stodgy I think that time
has passed).
I think your timing is good because it AFAICT Pinault/Gucci Group is
expanding the availability of BV so perhaps it would only be a matter of
time before the recipient came to understand on her own what she received.
Now she will already have the bag when her cohorts get hip to BV.
Lastly, if the recipient isn't suitably impressed and fails to be impressed
for some time, might I suggest that one way to get the point across is to
take said recipient to Italy and let her people watch for a while. :)
