Another Saks Closing

"dcody25" <dcod...@mindCUTspring.com>
I just heard that Saks is closing its Minneapolis store on 1/28/05. Very
sad, I had a grand time working there!

And they're converting the Saks in Hilton Head to an "Off Saks" store next year
too.

Hilton Head?
Does this have anything to do with Paris? <grin/duck>

Yay! That's great! I'll be sure to go there when we're at HHI, but IMO,
they should also do the same for their space in MPLS.

I'm glad you posted about this. My two aunts who stil live there are
*crushed* because that was one of their favorite places to shop and gave
them a choice other than NM. They're older and don't care for the crowds
and traffic at the MoA. Saks was great for them.
When we lived there, it was convenient for me for popping into during my
lunchtime to pick up something, but other than that, and in spite of all
the downtown renewal and other great aspects of the entire downtown area
(theatre & dining for some examples and all the loft rehabbing), I could
see this coming. The MoA is simply too big of a draw for sheer numbers of
shoppers. IMO, NM gave it a little too much competition downtown,
especially for many upscale shoppers seeking more upscale & designer
goods. I don't know if Saks corporate offices ever really understood that
a demographic with 'disposable income' actually existed in MPLS and IMO
their stock showed that, which is a shame because the space is beautiful.
Although downtown still draws a lot of the artsy crowd and singles, many
other upscale MPLS shoppers (especially with families) have moved to the
burbs and the exurbs. I think Target saw this coming as well and it may
well have been a factor in their dumping of Marshall Fields.
I'm glad the Off 5th part of the store will stay open on the first floor
and hope they would think about expanding it, making that *entire* space
into more of a draw, sort of a mini outlet area and offer free rail
transfers or some kind of transfer package from the MoA to the Nicollet
Mall/Gaviidae Commons area. It's a gorgeous space and would make a
fabulous upscale large Off Fifth outlet. However, I saw in the Star that
Saks may place one of their Herbergers stores into the rest of the space
so they don't have to eat so much of the lease and stop any pressure from
some in the city council to just put something retail in the space. I
just can't see Herbergers making a go of it in that area...
All that said, I feel the worst for those seventy–some employees who
will be affected by the closing in the dead of the winter.

I think Target saw this coming as well and it may well have
been a factor in their dumping of Marshall Fields.
The whole Department Store Division (Dayton's, Hudson's, Marshall
Fields morphing to just Marshall Fields) has been a drag on Target
Corporation's financial metrics for years.
The pundits were surprised at how much May paid.

At least they're not working in Senator Dayton's office.
