Carmel – The End of a Dynasty

kaos...@aol.comNOSPAM (KAOSLO1)
Well, our local paper announced today that our Saks will be closing after the
holiday season. It's 2 stores anchor the Carmel Plaza. I will have nowhere to
visit Bobbi, Trish, or Laura. No more Kate Spade. No more Manolo's to gaze
at. No Kiehls. We will be stuck with our crappy Macy's.

This is such sad news. Why would I want to shop at the Carmel Plaza?
It was bad enough when I Magnin went out of business.

Not only are they closing the Carmel Saks, but the ones in Pasadena,
Palos Verdes, Mission Viejo and La Jolla as well.
So it's not so great for those people either. Really surprised about
Pasadena!

Are they all the smaller stores?

Maybe they'll upgrade the Macy's. Come to think of it, from what I've
seen of Macy's, don't hold your breath.

Unlucky people (unless they don't care about Saks) are also in:
Fort Worth, TX (North East Mall)
Garden City, NY
Grove City, PA (Grove City Factory Shops)
Nashville, TN (100 Oaks Mall)
Worcester, MA (Worcester Commons)
Really surprised about Pasadena!
Given what they wrote in the press release, they're closing 7% of
their GSF but they'll only lose 4% of their sales in the process. So,
alas, they must be marginal stores.
Given the shortage of good mall space (it may not be good mall space,
that's why they're closing) in a lot of California, you may have
something to look forward to.
On the other hand, the California Department of Motor Vehicles may
install the drivers' license camera right next to where Saks kept all
the naughty black lace pnaties! <grin/duck>

I bet they are and I bet they are also closing the one in the Hamptons.
This just STINKS!

i haven't heard anything about the southampton one closing. i like that one as
well; it's like a series of smallish rooms and it's got the only decent makeup
selection for fifty miles or so.

The one in Fort Worth is 100,000 square feet – not "small" unless
you're building a Wal–Mart.
and I bet they are also closing the one in the Hamptons.
Garden City, NY – the wrong end of NY.
Or is that close enough to the Hamptons for Government work?
This just STINKS!
IMHO, not as bad as the maker of Twinkies going bankrupt.
Obviously too many Mommies feeding their children "health food bars"
that have the essential gnawing characteristics of honey–coated
sawdust, and a flavor to match. <grin/duck>

Austin doesn't even *have* a Macy's. we do have a Nordie's, tho.

IMHO, if you had to have one store, you got the better of the two by
far.

As a resident of the Monterey Peninsula, I am heart broken that Saks is
closing. Perhaps the decision was "financed" by the gas companies (smile)
to make us fill up our gas tanks and head up to San Jose, Palo Alto, or SF
for our cosmetic splurges?

This is such a bummer for Carmel! I hope the Santa Barbara Saks doesn't
close too.

Eh –– I always thought the one in Pasadena was tiny and kind of lame.
Not much selection at all!
Then again, I could be unfairly comparing it to the fantastic Chicago
Saks of my youth.

There was a Saks in Worcester? I'm not surprised that didn't work for
them.
Frankly, I'm surprised the Saks in Boston stays open. I never see
anyone in there––it's like a ghost town.

Sad to hear of the Carmel closing...was just there in early August for our 25th
Anniversary, and stopped in to admire (but not purchase) the merchandise. I
suppose that's the problem. There's really not much at the "mall" anymore,
anyway...this would spell its demise, I'd think.
Carmel never struck me as much of a "Saks" kind of place, anyway, unless one
just wanted to avoid going to SJC or SFO at all costs. I think the essence of
Carmel is to look so laid back and relaxed that one could never guess who had
the bucks and who didn't. Not exactly Saks' forte'.

It is or was an Saks outlet and I'm not surprised it's doing poorly.
Everything in that mall does poorly and the Saks outlet was one of the
worst I've been in when it comes to great finds.
I'm surprised that you're surprised that the Saks in Boston stays open.
I did a LOT of shopping in there!
