bright colors

"[they wear] bright and tacky.
Tell them about pastels. Earth tones."
It seems to be a quite popular opinion –– elegant outfits should be
either in pastels or earth tones. Elegance cannot be reached if one
wears non–pastell non–earth colors. Well, Not everyone looks good in
these colors. Most women with Italian heritage, for example, look
washed out in anything pastel. Some cool skinned people look sickly in
earth tones. What do those people suggest for them –– black, black,
black? Just how silly is it to tie elegance to certain colors?

if you asked me 7–10 years ago, i would have agreed. now, i generally
think that elegance is more dependent on having only one significant
characteristic. for example, if you have a heavily brocaded material,
it's best to have a more simply cut dress (e.g. no overflowing
ruffles). another example is catherine zeta jones's famous red versace
dress: a gorgeous bold red in a rich but simple luxe fabric with a very
simple (simple as in overall lines, not as in construction) cut. i
think that almost any color could work on the right person (i've yet to
see elegant neon); it's the pairing of material quality and
construction that's important.
i also automatically associate good/high quality material/construction
with elegance since shoddy material/construction frequently has a
detrimental effect on overall outfit presentation (e.g. puckering at
the seams which means that the garment doesn't drape/lie properly).
all IMNSHO,
