Burt's Bees Bug Repellant. It has citronella in it, works great and I don't
mind using it on the kids since it's natural.

I used Cutter brand last weekend when we were ripping down ivy and
cutting grass etc. and had pretty good luck with that; it was the
Deep Woods (I think that's the variety) which has a higher
concentration of DEET than the other Cutter stuff. I bought a box set
of the brand at BJ's that had the heavy–duty stuff, some "Skintastic"
stuff with aloe, a kid's version which will probably be enough for
just being out on the deck or whatever, and some towelettes which I'm
going to keep in the car.
I like the Off Botanicals, but it's more for walks in the park than it
is for yard work when the bugs are out with a vengeance, which they
are around here right now. Hot + Humid = miserable. Bleah. Makes my
glasses steam up. =)

I'm okay with Off Skintastic. I try to spray it on my clothes rather than
on my skin whenever possible.

My 10–year–old son has extreme allergic reactions to mosquito bites.
He gets hard, red areas the size of a CD around the bites and then
develops blisters. I have been using Cutter insect repellent on him
for years (he gets the bites only when we forget to use the Cutter). I
think the experts have said in recent years that high levels of DEET
in the repellent are not as harmful to children as once thought to be.
If you are planning to use this on a child, I would consult a
pediatrician for his/her advice, just for your peace of mind. MJ

A third vote for Cutter. It's the best I've tried, no bites at all with this
one. Another plus is it doesn't have that distinctive smell that screams
"Mosquito Repellent!".
I've tried the smelly ones and they work OK to repel mosquitos but not as well
as Cutter's. With the others I usually manage to still get one or two bites as
the smell wears off since I think it may actually be the smell itself that
repels mosquitos. Plus, the sweet lemony–citronella scents tend to actually
actract bees, wasps, and hornets as well as they repel mosquitos.
One thing I tried that did not work AT ALL was Avon's Skin–So–Soft, which
supposedly either repels mosquitos or doesn't allow them to bite skin,
depending on who's telling the story. SSS didn't work at all for me, I was
full of bites. Plus the SSS felt very greasy on skin and left grease–stain
marks where it contacted clothing. Yuck!

Just remember that natural does not mean safe. You can have just as bad
a reaction to something natural as something artificial. Poison Ivy is
natural ;)
