Trench coats

Ruddell <ruddell'Elle–Kabo...@canada.com>
Read an article in the paper today (off–line on newsprint) that trench
coats are making a comeback for women.
Man, I remember when this one hit a few years back and *everyone* seemed
to be wearing them. Hope it's not true as we don't need a city full of
Columbos again...

Trench coats have been hot for a while now.
However, the trend has been to go outside the traditional "Casablanca
trenchcoat" to include other colors, and even print.

I don't have a particular fondness for the style for myself; the details
probably don't make a short person look taller, if you know what I mean. (I
tried to ebay a navy one with red stitching last fall and got zero bids on
it.)
I would strongly recommend that anyone––or at least any woman––who is
looking for a great deal on trench coats should head to the nearest
Salvation Army store. I always see tons of London Fog and Misty Harbor
trenchcoats there in a huge range of colors, usually in great condition and
priced between $5 and $10. Like dress coats, trench/raincoats seem to
languish in closets, remaining in great condition until they are donated.

I love tranchcoats. I wasn't aware they were ever "out"
much less in. However, A pal gave me the WNTW book for Xmas. Trinny and
Susannah advise women of my build (along Susannah's mould) to avoid
trenchcoats. I was in the market for a new coat, so I went out looking for a
non–trench. Sadly, I found the most gorgeous brick red–deep berry (I swear
it changes shades) trench. Had to lemming. I do look as wide as two Mack
trucks with it buttoned and belted, so I mostly run around with it open.
Kind of defeats the purpose. But it's a coat that gives one that "princess"
feeling. Very fun.
Cheers & all

I bought a trench years ago, as they're classic and sort of
executive–looking, but found that they do, indeed, make me look four
feet wide. Won't buy one again, regardless of the color! But I do need
a raincoat. Any suggestions re a good cut for a short, stocky woman's
raincoat?

I would think a trench coat without the belt would look fine.

I think your best bet is a Macintosh raincoat. See below:

I find trenchcoats very flattering. I always have a collection of trenchcoats
– I currently own a
lightweight wool black trenchcoat
beige/taupe one
and of course, my favorite red one.

I have been looking for a nice red one. Do you remember where you got yours?
Thanks!

Double–breasted anything always make people look wider...so the
raincoat above is a good alternative if you want to avoid that.
I like the colors too....too bad it's sold out.

The jacket is not sold out. It's brand new and isn't even in the stores yet.
You can call the 800 number and order one, and they'll send it out once they
get it in stock.

Ooh that is gorgeous! The peach color is so me. God knows here in FL I
need a good raincoat, too. I'll have to be on the lookout for when this
hits the stores... I need it!
As always, AF to the rescue. :)

I'm pretty sure that the style above is not sold out, but is just not
in stock yet because it is a new item for the spring. It was just
added to the Gap website a few days ago and I haven't seen these in
the stores yet. There may also be more colors in the stores not
available online – they did this with the macs last year. I have
their bright blue mac from last spring and the pale lavender sateen
one from the fall. I always look forward to rainy weather because
wearing them makes me feel cheery!
