Two Killer Oscar Dresses –– Really

joel <re...@optonline.net>
I've always thought it was kind of sad that we couldn't post images here
on alt.fashion because over the years I've had a ton of neat stuff. I
was also in the forefront of the battle to keep af free of ebay
listings. But it was really the right thing to do.
But tonight I have something a little special. Two dresses that were
worn to the academy awards. Some of you who are into clothing and
construction might enjoy seeing them. They're quite beautiful.
I have a great customer in Wyoming who somehow knows someone large in
the movie business. She hasn't told me who –– and I haven't asked. But
she sent me these dresses explaining what they were and asked me to pass
the malong to my shop girl for the prom .
While Cheryl Ann's a terrific kid there's no way she's getting into
either of these. And I think I know of a museum in the midwest who'll
want them. If you're into great clothes, subtle details and great
construction. These'll be right up your alley.
I've posted them to the fashiontrac chat site with a similar
explanation. You'll have to jump to the link from there. But it explains
the construction.
Here's a link. Sorry for the jumps. But I think you'll find their worth
seeing.

Joel, thanks for sharing. Those were beautiful. I know nothing about garment
construction, but they were gorgeous. Do you know what year/ who wore them?
Did your customer wear them?

I believe both dresses were worn within the last three years and
unquestionably
by the same woman. My customer has really become a valued friend over the
past
couple of years and when she emailed me about them she just explained that
she
had a friend in Hollywood who had worn these dresses to the Academy Awards
and
sent them on to her.
I called the sage dress the Gwyneth dress because it really looked like
the
dress Gwyneth wore the night she won the oscar. But wasn't hers pink? So I
don't know who actually wore them. i just know that the lady they came
from had
no reason to tell me the background. I probably would have responded to
them
knowing nothing about them.
So now I have these two beautiful dress that I can't sell. Yikes. She sent
a
black silk number with an asymetrical hem that's a major drooler. If you
guys
like seeing the special things from time to time. I'll do this more often.
joel
Gwyneth's dress *was* pink, but I agree, it is similar. Please do share. I
for one enjoy it.

Wow. Great connection for you!

Hers was pink and IIRC, it was a Ralph Lauren. It had spaghetti straps and
again, IIRC, a slight v neck line.

See, this is why I could never be in the business you are in. I need to know
the history of everything. I'd get too hung up on the history of the actual
garment than the garment itself! Think of the stories that the garments
you've had could tell! ;)

Oh, definitly post your links. Please!

I need another formal gown like I need another lipstick, but I'm drooling
over (and ruining) the cream gown.

Jenn history or provenance (we call it that because it sounds better) is kind
of important. And the first question a dealer in anything should ask is: Where
did it come from. This gives you some background & sometimes protects you from
buying stolen items (patyicularly if you don't like the answer).
What happens is the longer you do it, the more fascinated you become by
treatments, use of textiles, neat details –– often things you don't see in
modern clothes.
