Have you ever suffered from fashion whiplash?

p...@midway.uchicago.edu (Trilby)
I know I'm a slow adapter. It takes me not months but years to get used
to fashion changes. But this summer I have had two cases of fashion
whiplash that threaten to send me to the emergency room. To wit:
1. Capris. Railed against them, hated them, thought they were stupid
looking, unflattering, and generally dopey. Just last June I had a
conversation with my sister trying to figure out what body type would
actually look good in them.
Two months later, I own SIX PAIRS of capris. Four of them are Lilly, two
are from the Talbot's 50 percent off sale.
2. Leather. Leather is for shoes, gloves, and pocketbooks. It is not to be
worn on one's body.
Well, I just bought a black leather jacket at Target.
So ... does anyone else here suffer from whiplash?

I'm in the process of having an Eileen Fisher whiplash. Looking, but
haven't bought anything yet. I love linen and AJ said it's the best.

Of course it can work, Miss Priscilla!
Along the same lines, I am eagerly waiting for the pink knit Chanel knockoff
top to be restocked at Arden B., then I'm gonna wear it with a black leather
skirt! (I told this to the sales associate and his eyes widened to the size of
dinner plates––I don't think he expected that idea to come out of the mouth of
a woman who obviously remembers when T. Rex ruled the earth.)

I just went through their website and the zipfront "Chanel jacket" that I saw
at the store yesterday isn't posted on the site. It is a wonderful thing,
available in pink, black or white. It's got bands of delicate white and black
beads/sequins down both sides of the front zipper and partway up the arms
(which have zippers at the cuffs) and across the hem. It's knit, it's
gorgeous, it's only $88 and I cannot WAIT for them to restock it. Salesdude
told me yesterday that it sold out in about two hours.

Absolutely count me in on the Capri's....swore I couldn't pull them off...I
have three pairs.
I am jealous of those of you (EMiriam) wearing those low rise jeans...now that
is something I just cannot pull off. I just feel so damn hippy (hips, not
flower child) in them.
But I think my biggest whiplash is stating that I would never be caught outside
in workout clothes and lately, gasp, sigh...I've been publically seen in Yoga
Pants, tank top and slide on tennies, but they are sooo comfortable, sigh....oh
where are the AF Fashion Police!! But I do promise that I do not wear them out
in evenings and such...only for running to the Post Office and local
errands...Thank bob, no one lives up in my neck of the woods except Kayper!!
And I don't think she'd report me!

I felt the same way about workout clothes...until I started practicing
yoga daily. Now I practically live them. I'm so lazy that I wear them
to the office a few days a week––as long as I don't have any meetings
and I'm going to be on the computer all day, who cares? Wearing regular
work clothes has started to feel like dressing up! Sad but true.

I swore I'd never wear silver jewelry. I never liked it. But then my mother
gave me her diamond and platinum engagement ring and, of course, I wanted to
wear *that*!
So I started buying a few pieces of silver, and then I got some pieces that
were made of both silver and yellow gold. Now I wear the 2–toned jewelry with
my gold and silver and Mama's ring, and it sort of meshes.
I also never thought I'd grow out my hair and wear it down. It's *so* curly,
*so* wild, and I kept it very short. But I did let it grow out some years ago.
Even then, though, I kept it up in a clasp or in a loose bun at the nap of my
neck or I'd have someone French braid it because it always looked too
outrageous to me.
I finally came to terms with it, however, and accepted it. Now I wear it down
more than any other way. –– Beckie

I love workout clothes, too! I go through phases where that's all I want to
wear. Plus it helps me pretend I'm on spa week when I'm not.
My biggest fashion whiplash was when I swore off trend clothing completely.
That lasted a fair number of years. Now I buy fun trendy things again but
not solely.

When ankle–length and lowercalf–length skirts and dresses first became really
popular (early 90s maybe?) I was sure I wasn't tall enough to wear them and
that I'd end up looking shorter than I already am. Nice skirts, but not for me.
One day, a girl I worked with came in wearing a gauzy ankle–length skirt,
boots, and a long sweater. She looked great, and she's my height, so I tried
on a long skirt the next time I went shopping. Lo and behold, I actually
looked taller with nothing visually breaking up the line of my leg, and now
it's all I wear.

Red lipstick. Once upon a time, I thought it looked trampy. Then it
became common enough that it lost that connotation for me but I thought
it was too dramatic and noticeable around people who were used to seeing
me in more muted lip colors. I decided to just start wearing it once
I moved from Chapel Hill back to Boston and voila, lots of new people
or friends I hadn't seen for years who had no particular expectations
about my cosmetic choices (I wore little makeup at all when they had last
seen me, for that matter) so I didn't feel funny about it.
Scarves (as in "indoor" scarves. I've worn plenty of winter scarves).
Okay, so I still haven't worn them but I have a number of Hermes
scarves, some that have never been worn at all because they were
gifts from Japanese relatives. Others were given to my mother and now
I've got them. A couple of months ago, I accidentally eyed a deeply
colored, happy silk Pucci scarf that forced me to buy it. Since then,
I've been scarf hunting with the intent of taking up scarf–wearing
once the Dallas heat lets up.
Birkenstocks. I loathed the look for years. I don't exactly LOVE the
look but I'm so addicted to the comfort that I've been buying and
wearing them for the last 10 years. I've probably owned at least 10
pairs. I currently have four pairs, the others casualties of puppy
teeth or more typical wear and tear.

All my fashion whiplash has to do with color. Back in the 80s, I thought I had
cool coloring and wore fuschias, purples, royal blues and hot pinks. Then I
became Masha of The Seagull and dressed only in black. Now I just pick colors I
like, which are almost never the jewel tones I used to favor. This was a very
khaki and bone summer.

Priscilla, was it the collarless one? I wanted that today and said no because
there were no pockets but I could be persueded, lol.
cary
Yes, it's collarless (actually has a very small stand–up collar but looks
collarless at first glance) and the sleeves have rows of parallel
stitching down them––about four inches apart. It's not piecing of the
leather, either, just a small decorative touch. It's very Diana Rigg in
the Avengers, and the leather is like buttah.
I'm seeing it with a long skirt and boots, or out at night for a light
jacket on top of dressy black separates. It will be a good foil for my
scarf collection. It's so simple yet elegant that it will really come in
handy.
(Mind you, this is being posted by a coat 'ho. I can rationalize just

Yes, and am I glad I did. My biggest episode was probably in the
early 90s when I *had* been wearing tunic style tops over jeans and
leggings, thinking this would hide the extra 15–20 lbs I needed to
lose. WRONG! I saw myself in pics from that summer's family reunion
and I looked prego.
As y'all know, NOW is the first time I've been prego. After this I got
whiplash big time and my tops became shorter and more fitted at the
same time I tossed the leggings and began wearing more jeans and
khakis.
A few years later, I got whiplash when chunky heels were in – hated
them at first, grew to like them for being generally comfortable for a
day of walking.
Haven't had whiplash lately but predict I may soon on two fronts.
One, if I can find the RIGHT pair of pointed toe shoes. I hated these
until my Mom who wore these in the 40s pointed out that the right pair
that's pointed in the right places for your foot will fit w/o making
it look like a tanker. I've tried some but thus far, they either don't
fit or give me the tanker–foot look.
Two, if my post baby body is so much better than my pre–baby body (I
haven't gained any weight being prego and was overweight before so I
think I'll be thinner after) that I actually start liking skirts w/
hems ABOVE the knee. Seriously, I'll do it if I look good enough
after the baby comes. This will be a huge episode of whiplash for me.
I've been wedded to longer skirts my entire life.

I
love it.
~Flip–flops – not rubber ones but material ones with sequins and stuff. I
still only have one pair (from Target) but I *never* thought I'd wear
flip–flops.
The thongs I wear are from Nordstrom's and are Athena Alexander. They have
no sequins, but they are nice

I don't know you, John, but I remember the last time you posted and your
family has been on my mind. I hope you are all doing well.

Stacey,
Agreed with respect to the Dallas heat. If you are considering
becoming a scarf fanatic, and in particular, with respect to your
Hermes', you might want to check into the Yahoo Hermes Scarf group at
hermesscar...@yahoogroups.com. Its a treasure trove of where to buy,
what styles are new and how to wear.

I wouldn't call those flip–flops.
Hehe, but they are under the thongs category.

I vowed that I would never have long hair again and now it's halfway
down my back.
I vowed that I would never wear sweats or sweat like pants in public,
but I love jazz pants and yoga pants and I have the coolest retro
Adidas 3 stripe polyester wide leg track pants. And I was going to
buy this velour Bisou–bisou track suit, but it made me feel like a
mobster's wife. I might whiplash on that one.
This thread is great, but reminds me how I'm so Target deprived! I
don't understand how we have so many Walmarts and yet no Targets in
Canada. No Sonia Kashuk. No cheap Isaac Mizrahi. Feel sad for me at
least once as you're in your cool leather jacket. *sniff*

I suppose taking some time off from "public life" is one way to
describe it. Life's trown our family a few curves in the past two

Oh yeah.
In one word – pink.
As a light eyed blonde I railed against pink for years, instead working
my punk rock chic look all through my youth.
Then I chaged my hair color to red and....pink became something I
adored. Maybe because it wasn't supposed to look good but did or I was
reclaiming the color (snort) whatever.
All i know is I am a fan of pink.
