Review: Lola To Go and Dove Cleansing Pillows

Nickycharles2...@yahoo.com (Vicki in DC)
Lola to Go Palette
It's a keeper. The shades are blush – Afternoon Delight (rose w/
slight shimmer), Eyes – Skin Candy (tan w/ gold shimmer), Volcano (
chocolate brown, copper shimmer), Lips – Luscious (cherry red sheer),
Heart Breaker (blackberry w/ gold shimmer, looks interesting), Pout
(sheer rose a la MAC Twig or NARS Pigalle) and Grape Yard (sheer plum,
but lighter than Heart Breaker).
I tried the following; Afternoon Delight, Skin Candy and blended Pout
w/ Grape Yard. The Afternoon Delight is quite pigmented so remember
that if you get this palette! The effect is a "just exercised" or a
walk in the woods kind of flush that on me looked quite natural (I'm
cool toned). Skin Candy went on very, very sheer w/ just a hint of the
glitter, good for my purposes today but maybe not so great if you want
a bolder look. The Pout and Grape Yard also went on quite sheerly and
they give the Lips But Better look.
Nothing in the palette has a scent – a plus for me. You'll probably
want to as regular SOP for many of y'all ditch the little sponge
applicator and brush that come w/ this. The puff for the Afternoon
Delight is ok, but you may want to replace it w/ a regular blush brush
too for more controlled coverage since this is pretty pigmented for a
blush.
Dove Cleansing Pillows
My Eve Lom muslin has had it due to getting mildewed (gross, who wants
THAT on their face?) and I didn't want to have the same thing happen
w/ washcloths (I swear my bathroom is built like a cave w/ no fan to
air it out). So off I went ISO a face cleansing product built into a
single use application. I got these after reading the rave in "Real
Simple" for these, particularly if one's skin is combo like mine.
The pillows lather up like crazy and do indeed puff up when moistened
which is pretty cool to watch. They have a waffle texture on one side
for regular cleansing and a buf–puf like texture on the other to
exfoliate. So far, these cleanse my skin well, it's not tight after
use, or oily, and thus far, I've had no breakouts or nasty film left
after cleansing and rinsing.
But...the problem is in rinsing off the product. It takes alot of
time to get it all rinsed away properly, and forget about rinsing the
cleanser out of the pillow so you can use the pillow itself to rinse –
that too, takes forever. There's so much soap in these I can get 2
uses per pillow. I'm going to use these up, then get a cleanser w/ a
washcloth style method of delivery rather than the puff/pillow method.
A "cloth" will be bigger and easier to cleanse with than pillows, and
I'm guessing easier to rinse the cleanser out of, then use to rinse
the face w/ water.

That's why I like Olay facials. After I wash my face with the cloth and
cleanser, I rinse the cloth off totally and wipe the cleanser off my face.
Feels good and clean.
As for using a face wash with a face cloth, I use baby wash cloths. You
can
buy them like 10 in a pack for pretty cheap and they're softer than
regular
face cloths (and just cute). My bathroom gets mildewy fast too. I just
use
a wash cloth for 2 days, then throw it in the wash.
The other thing I love about the washcloth style, as opposed to the pillow,
is you can wipe out your sink and countertops each day after you are done
and keep it clean, so you don't even have to do a huge cleaning of your
bathroom very often... just touch ups (if your bathroom is miniscule, at
least, like mine).
ITA with Vicki's assessment of the pillows, but would add that they aren't
really big enough for makeup. You end up having to use both sides just to
wipe the makeup off, and that basically defeats the purpose of having the
two different textures.

wipe the makeup off,
I haven't yet found a cleansing product/method that can, all by itself, both
remove makeup and also cleanse the face. I am a firm believer in the double
cleansing method, however one accomplishes it. For me, it's removing
makeup––including waterproof eye makeup––with Albolene as Step One, then
washing with whatever I'm using at the time as Step Two.
Thanks for the review, Miss Vicki. I don't think the pillows would work for me
at all.

They won't – trust me EMD. I don't think these will do the job that
the double cleansing method does for you and they're a PITA to use
unfortunately.
I wanted to like they, they're cute little things but not practical
and the rinsing is also a PITA.

This is exactly my opinion of these as well. I've been using mine up but won't
repurchase unless there's a great sale or something. Cute product delivery
gimmick that doesn't quite work, IMO. I've also been using mine to clean
makeup brushes (after I've cleansed my face because there's still a ton of soap
left in these pillows!) and they work well for that too.

Forgot to add – with cleansing cloths I also use them to take my eye make–up
off – and it does come off. I also don't have to worry about getting eye
make–up on wash cloths that way.

The really soft thick white (no pattern) Bounty paper towels is what I use to
clean with whatever cleanser I am using. I can toss it and a big roll lasts me
a month to 6 weeks and I wash twice a day. A woman at a Erno Laslo counter
told me this years ago.
Just make sure you get the pillow soft one..not the cheapy ones cuz there are
actual wood chips ..that might scratch.

What's your skin type? I'm normal, slightly oily in summer, slightly
dry in winter. If you're the same type as me, I'll probably go w/
daily facials, or the Dove version of them next time since they sound
like they really clean well. Which formulation do you use?
One of these days, we'll install a fan in that bathroom but until then
I don't want to bother w/ any washcloths. The Eve Lom flannel
experience was nasty enough. Bleach.

The Lola palette sounds too interesting...and I totally agree with
your review of the cleansing pillows – too much soap! I actually like
the Olay cloths for when I'm too lazy to do more – I also (like the
others) rinse them out and use them to remove the soap from my face.
When I use another cleanser, I use Mirasorb sponges (which are squares
of gauze) that I found out about on fig's message board – these come 2
to an envelope (50 to a box) and they are mildly exfoliating as well –
and totally sanitary. Perfect disposable wash cloths!

I have sensitive skin and buy cloths/washes for that type. I found the Dove
facials drying but I can't remember which formula I used (I'm thinking they
were *not* sensitive skin ones cos I've only just recently worked out that
that's what I am). The Olay sensitive skin facials are great for me.

We have a fan in our bathroom but I don't think it works that great. I'd go
with one use things like the cloths if I were you too.
