Palettes....

kayper <kar...@comcast.net>
I was wondering, as I was "flipping" through the many cosmetics
websites I keep on file, just what kind of palettes are more
"usable" than others. There are the "combo" type, with everything
except a rear view mirror to apply your whole face, or just lip colors
or e/s colors and everything in between.
In studying palettes in the few years I've been here (and the 2 I
own, now) I've come to feel that the palette that works best for me
is the e/s and blush combo. A pressed powder addition is nice, but
the quality doesn't seem to be as good, and the amount you get –– as
the use *I* put to it –– empties it within just a few uses.
Any palette with lipcolors is pointless because I hate applying lip
color with my fingertip, brush, or any other applicator other than
the stick itself. The lipcolor–ONLY palette, therefore really *is*
useless, for me. I'm happiest with just blush and e/s and I'll add
my own foundation, powder and lipstick. What do you think?

I have at least four lip palettes and truthfully after the initial first few
weeks, I stop using them for the
same reasons you mentioned. I finally put together a palette of Francesca
Guerrera items because
the single cases are gigantic and I could see myself wanting to use the five
items I bought. There are
four shadows and the fifth is a shimmer to highlight the eye instead of a
blush. I have lots of single
blushes. I don't care for pressed powder in a palette and I like the
freedom to pick and choose
from single items more than one set grouping of items. I don't see a need
for a palette.

I love palettes, especially for travel, because they conserve space and
encourage creativity.
I have an eight pan and a 12 pan from Alcone and I've transferred almost all of
my lipsticks and creme concealers to palettes.
I generally make my own because they hold more product. The one I've mentioned
before is the GNC vitamin holder. The lid is much more secure than the ones
with seven individual lids.
A very easy palette to do is a vertical stacking one. Attach three or four
Jane or Jordana shadows together with crazy glue to form a cylinder. The bottom
of one shadow is glued to the cap of the one beneath it. The advantage for me
is that all my favorite highlight shades are in one stack and all my favorite
crease/liner shades are in another.

I like eye shadow and combo eyeshadow/blush/liner palettes the best. My
favorite is my Stila 4 pan with Chinois, Puck, Ebony and Kitten. Second
favorite is the Stila Double Duty which has two gray–ish e/s, two pinky
blushes and a liner. Third is the MAC Anniversary cool tone e/s set. I
also like combo sets like Nars Lust for Life, UD Face Cases and that MAC x
12 one from late 2001, but I never use the lip products in them. :P

Agreed! I prefer one without a pressed powder since it's usually not good.

I agree! The only lip one I've actually been using on a regular basis
lately is the Two Faced SEXY lip palette since the colors are really nice
and pigmented, and the compact is small and cute to have in my purse. It's
just a hassle to use the lip products from larger palettes and face cases.

Another palette fan here, for the same reasons. But I usually buy
mine made up. The ones I'm getting the most use out of are credit
card size lip palettes like the UD Lip Arsenal and Awake, and the
LORAC Pro 9 lip/cheek palette. But then I don't mind applying shades
w/ my fingers. Another fave is the Paula Dorf Naughty and Nice which
has shadows, lipcolor and cheek color in a credit card size. Finally
an oldie but goodie, NARS Lust for Life.
Palettes are hard to resist for me – they remind me of art supplies
and I've made some mistakes buying some w/ colors I couldn't wear.
Now I'm a lot more selective and go for the mostly cool shades only
palettes. These I usually get plenty of mileage from.

i love the *idea* of a palette, but most are useless to me. i've tried lip
palettes, figuring that i'd get into the lip brush habit if i made some
palettes but i just can't be bothered with a brush. i don't like palettes with
a combo of cream and powder products because they always end up comingled. and
purchased eye shadow palettes invariably have several colors which i either
already have, or would never use. stila and mac palettes work for me, with my
choice of colors inside, as do homemade palettes with my own random shadows
glued inside. also, i never touch up any makeup except lipstick, so i only
carry makeup on vacations, and the eye shadow palettes i've got are more than
adequate for me to arrange an appropriate selection.
