I love them, when I have them and it's raining. I usually don't check the
weather report and end up forgetting one and buying a new one. During the
rainier months (that would be pretty much september–june) I buy one once
every couple of months.
They either break or get lost, or nicked.
Where in the uk do you live that you don't *seem* to be that concerned to
have one?

They're a necessary evil in Houston.

When I was on the way home from the doctors' office and the weather
looked threatening... I dashed into an Academy Sporting Goods store
and bought a golf umbrella. (In the past five years....)

I love parasols.

I have five. I live in sunny South Africa where it rains nearly
every summers afternoon, just as civil servants are leaving the
office, for about half an hour. I keep one in my vehicle, one in
the office, one at home, an extra one which I invariably forget at
either home or the office if the weather is fine and a fold–up one
in my large bag. Bought the fifth one a few weeks back in
preparation for the summer season. Of course, they're useful for
keeping the hot sun off one as well.

Sounds like they need to change their working hours.

That's how Honduras was too. Hot half the day, raining the other half.

I bought a big fiberglass golf umbrella last winter and I keep it in
the car. A few weeks ago we were going to a wedding and when arrived
at the church it started pooring. DH and I were resigned to getting
wet in our nice duds but then I remembered the umbrella in the trunk.
He reached back to get it and we made it to the church nice and dry.

I have about 10 umbrellas. Most are microminis and super light ones
which I use to protect me from the sun (all my brollies are at least FP

*always* walk with a brolly in my bag.

I keep several umbrellas in each car and in the house. I just bought
3 new ones a month or so ago for the kids. Since I tend to forget
them, I buy them as cheaply as possible. I found umbrellas at Walmart
for $3, available in either the compact size or the regular size. My
9 yo DD got a cute blue one with smiley faces on it.
I like having a bunch of cheap umbrellas on hand because you never
know when you might need to give/lend it to someone. Last year, the
woman who loads the kids into cars at the front of the school was
standing in the pouring rain –– so I handed her one of the umbrellas
from the car. I got it back, but it wouldn't have bothered me if I
didn't.
I have a Solumbra double–layer golf umbrella for the sun, but it
works for rain, too.
We also have a collection of el cheapo ones in the cars and the e–kits.

I have two. A fancy, wood–shaft, leather handled number from Polo (blackwatch
tartan fabric) and a silver and red (mini) one that reads "Alfa Romeo."
I AM jonesing for one from Swaine Adeney & Brigg, though.
