Larry King Live had a special on Elvis Presley and it came to mind why
Elvis as a name didn't catch on for fans children?
Many people have names after stars (how many of us just past that age
group know someone named John/Paul/George/Richard(Ringo)/etc, but I've
never met anyone named Elvis.
Yes, the skater & the pop star (was he a pop star?) Costello yet that's
all who come to mind.
Odd in the least I'd say...
It was his talent that was judged, not his name. He was most popular in
people a little older than me, although I remember girls my age who were
totally in love with him and I even loved many of his songs. My older
friend who turned 60 this year on Elvis' birthday, would have had his
children if she could have. She adored the man. She sings well too. She
was the 21st of the 22 Story children that were on the Art Linkletter and
Groucho Marx show.

Probably because parents don't want kids with really weird names.
Do you want your kid being known as "ELVIS the PELVIS?"
I doubt there are very few kids named Edsel (outside of the Ford
family, who seems to recycle one of four male first names over and
over again) after the Ford Motor Company made the mistake of naming a
car after Henry Ford's father.

John and Paul are traditional Biblical names. George and Richard are
traditional British names.
Elvis is... Elvis.
Odd in the least I'd say...
The first time I came across the traditonal Hispanic name "Jesus," I
thought it was in bad taste if not sacrilegious. Now that I've become
older and wiser, I realize that the poor kid was given quite a
reputation to uphold. <grin/duck>
PS: Some of them are having a time with it in Texas... there are two
prisoners on Death Row with the first name of "Jesus." Even worse,
they have two named "Angel."

Unlike you, I *don't* doubt that there are very few kids named Edsel outside
the Ford family.
BTW, H.F.'s father's name was William. Unless you mean the car was named
after Henry Ford II's father, it was named for Henry I's son.

Not sure about as a first name, but there are a few Edsel's as a family
name.

Now that's confusing ;–)

I'll add to the list my favorite critic, Elvis Mitchell, who is the chief film
critic of the NY Times. Not only is he incredibly knowledgeable but also a
divinely funny writer. I love to read his reviews!

Elvis Stoiko is the skater and Elvis Costello is the pop star for lack of a
better term.
I have met one Edsel who was not affiliated with the Ford Motor Company.

I work with a man named Elvis, and believe me, I have to hold back the
comments. He's a good sport, but I am sure he's had his fill.

The family line is:
William
Henry (the founder)
Edsel
Henry II
By the time they named the Edsel, Henry I was a memory. (Also,
confusing things, Henry II is sometimes called "Jr." which he was
NOT.)
For those who have forgotten the Edsel models: Ranger, Pacer, Corsair,
and Citation. Ford makes a Ranger, AMC made a Pacer (if you've
forgotten it, "fishbowl on wheels"), and GM made a Citation. So at
least the names got recycled.

OK – another Elvis: Elvis Grbac, retired NFL quarterback, formerly of
the Kansas City Chiefs.

My step–father's name is Michael Jackson, which I'm sure is a common
name in the US, but it's pretty rare in Australia. He is American and
it's a bit disconcerting when a 6'5" skinny middle–aged white guy
introduces himself to you in an American accent as "Michael Jackson".
His standard line is "You don't make jokes, I won't sing". You're
getting the better end of the deal!
Julie.
