Who else knits?

"ahmward" <nospam.ahmw...@yahoo.com>
I have been a reluctant knitter but during the past two weeks, I've seen too
many tempting fibers. I bought
skeins of a beige wool with a multicolored thin silk wool wrapped around it
and made my first scarf. The
yarn is from Italy. Then I returned to purchase more yarn for another
scarf. This one is a blend of mohair,
viscose, metal, acrylic and nylon. One thread is black and white mohair and
viscose and the other is the
metal and nylon in shades of silver, copper and gold so the two blend
beautifully. In addition to the scarves
I've begun to crochet and afghan that picks up the colors in my family room
furniture. Now I want to
move beyond these easier projects to sweaters and shells.

I don't knit but my mother does...she is just incredible...she can knit just
about everything. She took the hobby back up when father passed away back in
81. My favorite item is her Norweigen Ski Sweater....I am so fascinated by
it...Back in the mid 80s she did a great deal of knitting for both the Georgio
boutique in BH and another boutique on Melrose. Nowadays she just knits
whatever her heart pleases!

I used to knit for fun, but never finished anything! Inspired by Audrey and
her daughters, I'm thinking of getting some pretty yarn (yes, Audrey, I'll
check that store in Cambria) and knitting a scarf. :)

Hey, if you want to get your feet wet, try www.whiteliesdesigns.com . She has
a great 'shapely tank' and 'shapely tee' design that's very simple, fits great,
and is perfect for showing off wonderful yarns. No affiliation, just love that
pattern.

I try to knit but I really sort of suck at it and haven't moved beyond scarves.
My allergy to wool complicates things considerably!
I'm a wiz at crochet, though. I'm working on a black lace wrap right now and
whenever anyone sees me working on it, they exclaim over it like it's really
complicated. It's just single and double crochet stitches with size 10 thread!
Super easy but it looks sooo cool. I already made one in ivory/gold.

I've been knitting for years. My oldest nephew thinks that it isn't a
proper sweater unless someone made it for you by hand. Unfortunately I
haven't really done much lately and as a result my two younger nephews
have a serious sweater deficiency.
I've got half of a sweater done for the toddler, so I should see if I can
finish that before the cold weather sets in and maybe that will jump start
my motivation.
I'd post pics, but strangely I can't find any.

i do! i usually start up in october since i don't like the feel of wool in the
summer (doh). this year i plan on making some chunky tweedy wool sweaters, and
i've got great old patterns for them. i like sweaters which hit just above the
hip bone and being short these are often hard to find (the right arm length is
even tougher!).

Does crocheting count? I crochet whenever I'm watching television and then, this past week, when
we drove to Myrtle Beach (report to follow) I crocheted the entire way. It really made sitting in
the car for 11 hours at a time much more pleasant and productive.
I have knitting needles (#7 and Champion #2) and have tried several times to become as absorbed in
knitting as crocheting but it never seems to work – maybe because the counting of stitches makes it
more of a chore for me than a relaxation.
Sounds like crocheting may be the right thing for me. I hate to count
stitches! what are you making?

David, it won't be that hard for you to learn how to do it. I was taught
how to knit in fourth grade,
and when I took an adult school class more than 40 years later, I picked it
up after an hour of
instruction. It's the same way with crochet. I crocheted an afghan when my
son was born 23 years
ago and began crocheting again this summer. Most adult schools offer
affordable classes with excellent
instructors. My crochet instructor's husband is a retired engineer. He
figures out her patterns and designs
for her and makes his own socks.

It'll undoubtedly refresh those old brain cells before you know it.
Knitting big squares is easy. It's making it into something that is hard.

I used to knit all the time; I learned how to help alleviate stress. I
made a few sweaters for myself, a dozen baby sweaters for friends (in
nonpastels; I love the colors in Lang's Bebe line), a beautiful
basket–weave scarf in the Bebe black for an ex (never knit for a
womanizer) and a patchwork afghan in gray, black and cream for a
friend's wedding (a good portable project because each square was
about a foot square). I don't seem to ever get around to it anymore,
though. But I should do a couple of baby sweaters for friends and
something for my boy.
Wool is very expensive around here, so I may give online ordering a
try––thanks for the recommendations.

I'm addicted to knitting scarves... I knit 8 scarves for christmas presents for
my friends last year, and I'm going to try and knit presents (or felt scarves,
like the gorgeous scarves I saw...@ grand central for $$$$ last year) for all my
friends (last christmas w/all of them!). In the past couple weeks I've been
knitting striped scarves– a merino wool gryffindor scarf for my 7 year old
cousin, and a long, skinny pink and black cashmere/merino scarf for myself,
both in stockinette in the round (so a tube, with fringe)

I'm knitting a pink & black cashmere scarf right now too! I bought the
yarn ages ago but never did anything with it. It's a very pale, ballet
pink and I'm doing row–by–row alternating colors in garter stitch.

You should! It's very simple and can be very relaxing.
Now that you're no longer a shopaholic, you have some time on your

My mom is the yarn hoarder...there was a great shop in downtown LA way back
when called the Super Yarn Mart, disappeared either after the riots or the
earthquake but mom and I would go down once a month and she would stock
up....and she is still stocked up.
A long time ago Connie and I found one cute yarn shop in Dallas. That was it.
Thank goodness for the internet and Ebay...haven't tried Ebay for yarn yet but
we'll have to check it out!

Right now it is a king size bedspread in bleach–washed peach and white – I'm using a N hook (I
started with a J but figured it would take waaay longer) and a pattern I designed myself. I am
hoping to have it finished by Spring as that is when I will want to use it.
I've done afghans for the offspring and the den, depending on what colors their rooms are at the
time. I can't remember the number of baby afghans I've made over the years. I did a king size spread
that took almost two years (!!) with cluster stitches joining granny squares and a scalloped edging.
Never again! I've also done a fringed lace shawl with a 1.00 mm steel needle – that one tortured
my eyesight big time.
