What I thrifted today

maladic...@aol.com (Maladicta1)
Black silk floral dress by Linda Allard $6.
Banana Republic bone twill capris $4.25
Liz Claiborne irish linen shirt in aqua $6.
New w/tags Sears aqua cotton t shirt $7.
Don't you love a store that prices a Sears t–shirt above a Linda Allard dress
because the T is new with tags? It took three hours and two thrift stores to
find these, but everything is in gorgeous condition. Decided to pair the T with
the capris and use the linen shirt as a jacket––the T shirt and long–sleeved
linen shirt are a close match. The dress has sheer chiffon sleeves in the same
print as the rest of the dress.
The dress was cheap, I'm guessing, because it was rumpled. My super steam
generator iron took the wrinkles out in two minutes.
Now here's where I blew it. I found a Maxx New York straw tote with leather
trim for about $4. It looked new but had been stored weirdly so it was knocked
out of shape a little. Not a big deal––very easy to reshape with the super
iron. The problem was I had never heard of Maxx New York and didn't know if it
was a good line or a cheapie. Since the lining was a rather loud and tasteless
zebra print, I decided it was a cheapie and passed it up.
When I got home, I googled it and saw that Nordies carries the line. Now I'm
tempted to go back and pick it up if it's still there. Of course, it won't be.
Carpe diem and all that.

If you think the lining's loud and tasteless and the whole thing looks
cheap, you don't want to buy it anyway (unless you're thinking of
making a killing reselling on ebay?) Not a missed bargain, a wise
choice! (Does that feel better?) :)
.... I _am_ serious about not buying it just because somebody used to
over–charge for it though!

Found a shimmery brown patent leather purse in a boxy shape for this fall at
antique/flea market sale. For 8.50GBP about $12US I figured it would be
fun.
I saw...and I don't know if it was authentic, and it was stained...it looked
like an 1970 era Chanel scarf. But it could have been a knockoff, I
wouldn't know. Joel, or any other of you vintage buffs...what should I look
for to see if it is real?

We found great items at a fantastic used book store last week. My 19 year
old found an almost perfect
Dress for Success by Edith Head for $9.95. It was underlined and
highlighted. Inside the book there was
a newspaper article of a column called Teen Speak and the article was about
the hazards of fun fashions. The
theme was to buy good basics that will last a long time but have fun with
accessories. It made fun of
people who wear every trend of the season all at once. It made fun of the
mod look. The book was
written in 1967. There is no date on the article.
For my son I bought three first editions by MFK Fisher: Bold Knife and
Fork, Serve it Forth and her
translation of Brillat–Savarin's The Physiology of Taste.
Yesterday when we were volunteering at a thirft store, my daughter bought a
copy of
The Preppy Handbook for thirty–five cents.
