Oscar de la Renta Silk Dress

cher...@aol.com (cheris)
I am auctioning off a beautiful silk dress by Oscar de la Renta on
ebay. I thought you alt.fashion people might be interested. This
dress is a one–of–a–kind designer dress that was originally purchased
at I–Magnin's in Beverly Hills. It retailed for over $500. I wore
this dress at a theater awards dinner which was honoring the late Mary
Martin. It has sat in my closet ever since. The dress is a size 8
and is in very good condition. Here is the link:

Sorry. I know my post was about something I was selling but it seemed
as if all the posts on this board were about commercial things. So
you are right. It is commercial in that way but it is also very
personal to me. I held onto that dress for 30 years. I thought the
people on this board were very aware of fashion and history and would
be able to appreciate the value of this dress. My bad. Sorry.

Don't worry about it. Jjjjjulie think she runs this group and Mike
was just making a little joke about it.
Selling something you've hung on to for 30 years is a big deal. Why
now?

Interesting question Dennis – I thought the same thing. I need to weed out
items that are probably 30 years old as well but for whatever reason I just
can't part with them. However, when I make the move South I definitely will
need to let go.
I would like to hear the reason as well.

It is really hard to say. I thought I would wear it again but never
did. Now, 30 years later, there is no way I can fit into it and it is
not the type of thing my daughter (the girl modeling the dress) would
wear. I loved the dress and the memories it held for me but I am at a
point in my life where I feel I do not need to hold on to material
things in order to retain those memories. I will always remember.
The night I wore that dress Mary Martin got on the stage to receive
her Lifetime Achievement Award and said "I am Peter Pan." And for
that moment she really was. Thanks for asking.

Thanks. Most interesting. I was hoping my 18 year old granddaughter
would
love all of the things I held onto (and she is the same size) but no go in
most
cases, but she has latched onto a few things. Yes, we do need to let go
of
some of the material things or the cup runneth over.

I think many people handle this by taking photos the the cherished
possessions before they
part with them. I have a dress bag full of clothes I've kept for
sentimental reasons, but as
the years go by, it's easier to part with them.

Thanks Audrey – actually, in most cases, I probably have a snapshot with these
items, but we are talking mucho mucho items.

Speaking of Oscar de la Renta, I was fortunate enough to run into the trunk
show at Sak's recently, and saw his incredible medieval jackets, made of
scrunched up velvet and fabulous braids, and they were magnificent. They came
with matching dresses, ball skirts and strapless camisoles, and pants. In
fact, everything was exquisite, and it made me realize that up close, many of
the designer clothing that you see in magazines cannot possibly be appreciated
unless you see it personally.
If only I had about $5000 for a little jacket, I would have snatched up the
black one in a second, lol.
DD and I also flipped over the dress worn by (i think) Diane Lane at the oscars
– rather feathery on the bottom – another thing that just had to be seen to be
appreciated.

I think it definitely has to do with the fabrics and details. Cary is so
right about seeing the clothes in
person. I love to look at the designer departments in the stores. Then I
go to the bridge lines to
purchase more affordable clothing.

From what I've read thus far I take it that you are moving to a warmer
climate. If I am correct, you won't
think about those wonderful saved items once you have moved. My mother did
the same thing when she
moved from New York to California. She gave away beautiful items but never
looked back.
