August Hits and Misses?

alicix...@hotmail.com (Alicia U.)
Hits!
Stila ILF in 20 watts–– melts into my skin. Half a pump is more than
enough to even out my skin tone.
Aveda cooling blush stick in Almost Dawn–– I don't have the product
name exactly right as I bought this at a Cosmetics Company store. Very
much like Stila Fade on me. I hope it isn't discontinued, but the
stick is very large and should last a long while.
UD shadow in Chopper and Stila shadow in Ray. Both are coppery colors
that look good on my warm toned skin and make my blue eyes stand out.
Dove skincare–– especially the foaming facial cleanser and the spf 15
lotion. I personally prefer the lotion to the Olay.
Not sure...
Stila Demi Rose lip creme–– I don't think I quite have the hang of
applying it. Sometimes it looks great and other times it looks as if I
let my lipstick "melt" in the car before using it. The color is quite
good with the Aveda, though.
I know this is an early start to this thread, but I haven't had so
many good "hits" in awhile!

Hits:
*DHC Olive Oil basic line, especially the Deep Cleansing Oil. Love the
soap, toner (amazingly like the old Pola Salus II version) and oil as well.
I've been using samples and I'll probably order the set soon.
*Sephora pink brush set – these are so soft besides being so adorable
looking!
*Citizens of Humanity jeans – glad I splurged on them!
*Seychelle's pink kitten heel Sigerson Morrison knockoff flip flops (also
comes with pink clip on flowers)
*Mossimo red corduroy pants – very soft and comfy and will be a nice fall
staple
*Enzo Angiolini black pointy toe kitten heel slingback pumps
*London Fog from Target black umbrella with colorful pop–art circles all
over
*All the fun on topic threads on AF lately!!
Misses:
*The Isaac Mizrahi line from Target – nothing I've seen has truly appealed
to me (so far anyway), except the suede pencil skirt and they didn't have my
size available. The denim jacket with pink lining is cute, but waaaay too
big on me.
*Dr. Scholl's–ish black kitten heel sandals from Target – ugh, shouldn't
have bought these (even if they were on sale) since they kill my feet!
Laurie

kayper <kar...@comcast.net>
Wow, that time of month, already?
Hit's
*Stila's Creme Bouquet palette. The colors are gorgeous and
of typical Stila quality. That's my only complaint about
the SK palette I got last Fall. The powder, shadows and
blush take quite a few layers to get any pigment to show up.
*Laila Laila edp –– lovely, soft, demure scent.
*Freeman Silk Pie Body Wash
" Sunflower & Vanilla Sugar Body Butter –– makes me
want to scarf about 17 cupcakes.
*Alba Botanical Vanilla Mango Cream Shave –– on the scent alone,
but it's also a good shave cream.
*philosophy Falling in Love body wash –– wonderful floral scent.
*DDF Pedi–Cream –– this works better than anything else, yet.
*Clarins Buffing Beads Facial Scrub
*JJacobs Citrus Body Lotion –– love it to pieces, but won't be
able to afford the full size, so I'm trying to make my sample
last as long as possible.
*Cargo Santa Fe e/s –– Perfect cool beige with a smidgen of cool
rose.
*Jane Lipsticks –– Mostly Mauve, Vanilla Bean, Ladylike Jewel and
Romeo are all good colors, and those that are flavored are good.
*Pretty Pretty in Marina (from the Sephora.com clearance) –– very good
red for my coloring. Fortunately, I can't "stock up."
*Revlon LipGlide Sheers –– love them all! This gloss was meant for me.
*L'Oreal ColorJuice in Raspberry Smash –– I got this from the child
who didn't want it and I like it fine.
*Sephora Jumbo lip pencil in Figue –– good.
Non–Hits
*Burt's Bees Coconut Foot Cream –– looooove the scent, but the
texture is basically just thick vaseline. Too much, really.
*Nars Zen Blush –– can't make this work either as a blush or a
bronzer. I'm the wrong color.
*BBell's e/s duo I forget the name of but will call Pink/Plum ––
no pigment. I have to excavate and then apply with a spatula
to get any color pay–off at all. However, that just means I'll
go through it more quickly!
*Jane Lipstick in Mango–Licious –– great color, but the flavor was
putrid. Dumped without a second thought.
*Sephora jumbo lip pencil in Cherry –– not good at all (actually,
I'm not sure they didn't mix it up when they packaged my order.)
*NYC Kiss Gloss in red –– can't place the flavor but it isn't
worth the color, that's for sure.

hits –
YR "Burnt Caramel" lipstick – great for an Autumn type – nice creamy
texture too.
copycat version of Carolina Herrera "212"
miss –
Nair 3 in 1 – I hated this enough to issue a separate post as a
warning – still grrr–ing.

*DHC Cleansing Oil (waves to Laurie!) I am definitely ordering this stuff.
I can't explain it, but when I rub it on my face it just dissolves makeup
and rinses away every drop of foundation and eye makeup. Magical!
Yep, this is exactly what makes this product so miraculous. My face feels
so clean afterwards, almost enough that I don't need to use a regular
foaming cleanser afterwards. (But I wouldn't skip that second step, though
I almost forgot to last night!)

Orange!?!?? They probably got a rancid sample. The color looks
golden with olive undertones to me.
It's olive oil based and I've read it breaks some skin out. Better to try a
sample first. Others have claimed its orange color actually turned their
skin that color. Just got that from makeupalley and other places.

Only one major hit this month:
Paula Dorf's Perfect Glo foundation in Parchment. This makes my skin look
flawless and healthy and provides a light to medium cover. It also comes
with it's own mini foundation brush which is (shock horror) perfect for
application.

I can't explain it, but when I rub it on my face it just dissolves makeup

*Lancome Photogenic foundation. Incredibly light and a perfect color match
(finally!)
*Revlon lipglide sheer in melon. Yeah, yeah, I am a little late to this
lemming item, but I love it! This went directly into my everyday makeup
bag.
*Gap's new fall corduroy. I bought the large bag and the knee–length skirt
and couldn't be happier with either.
*Abba volumizing spray and molding paste. On sale for 50% off at
Albertsons, so I'm going to stock up on this. The spray is a great
replacement for my mop volumizing spray, which is a lot more expensive, and
the paste is the perfect consistency for styling my hair.. not too hard, not
too gooey.
*The AF'er who suggested using those huge Sephora gift pouches for dustbags!
I now have all my bags properly stored. :)
Maybes:
*Dove cleansing pillows. I still can't make up my mind about these things.
They are so cute and I love the cleanser thats in them, but they are so
impractical for removing makeup. I save them for days that I don't wear
foundation, but it seems more practical on those days to just soap and my
hands.
*Definicils mascara. I got this as a GWP and I do like it, but I think its
ridiculously overpriced and will not buy it once the sample runs out.
Misses:
*Kiehl's lipbalm. Sorry, I know a lot of you guys here love it, but I can't
stand the smell/taste. The texture and its moisturizing ability are great,
but I will not be buying this one again.
*Kiehl's pineapple scrub. Another one I've read about here that I wasn't
impressed with. Origins' similar Never a Dull Moment has a nicer scent,
IMO, and more scrubbiness.

Cleansing gel and moisturizer are particularly nice. The Cleansing Gel
doesn't lather, but does leave you clean. I am mixing in a bit of jojoba
oil. (I will still go back to Chantecaille in the winter).
–La Bella Donna pressed minerals I re–discovered this after a long haitus.
Swirl it on with a kabuki and you get great natural looking coverage with a

Hits:
– Rusk Sensories "brilliance" shampoo with grapefruit and honey – love the way
this makes my hair feel, and it smells great, too!
– UD XXX Shine in Heatherette – a nude lip that actually works on me! Love the
silver sparkles in this.
– UD Sell Out face case – love all the colors in this! So perfect for a
warm–toned gal like me. <waves to Leilani, who inspired this purchase!>
– NARS lip lacquer in Hellfire – just plain gorgeous
– Stila Freya nail shimmer – great color for a pale pedicure! Makes my feet look
tan.
– Alchemy Ylang Ylang shampoo from Adorebeauty – this smells soooo great and is
so nice and gentle on my hair. I love this after I've been out swimming.
– WTF blush in Embarrassed – perfect natural blush shade for me!
– Jane Iredale lipsticks (samples) in Brett and Carmen
– linen–blend dresses from White Stag (WalMart) – I have an ankle–length brown
one and a knee–length tan floral one and they've both gotten tons of
compliments. Plus they're so easy to throw on in the morning when I'm half
asleep, and I still look put together!
– cream grosgrain skirt from Issac Mizrahi's Target line – really wearable and
versatile – I'm wearing it with sandals and bare legs now, and will switch to
slingbacks and stockings in the fall.
– Xhiliration Asian–style wrap top in a rose floral print – I've gotten so many
compliments on this and no one can believe I bought it at Target!
More hit than miss, so far:
– L'Oreal Wrinkle De–Crease – I think this might actually be doing something,
but I haven't been using it long enough to tell for sure. I'll write a detailed
review later this week.
– KMS Hair Play Texture Blast spray – I haven't quite got the hang of this, but
it does seem to oomph up my hair pretty well.
– UD Cream eyeshadow in Dazed – I haven't quite got the application down (it
dries pretty quickly so you have to work fast) but this stuff wears great!
Little to no visible creasing after 12 hours, and very little fading, too. This
shade is sort of a shimmery golden champagne. I'll definitely get more colors
(Knee High is next on my list) and play with this stuff some more to see if I
can get it to apply/blend a little more evenly. If I can, it'll be a definite hit.
More miss than hit, so far:
– the Clean scents – I've tried Clean edt, Clean Men edt, and Clean Baby Girl
edt and wasn't thrilled about any of them. I still have samples of Sweet Layer,
the Clean oil, and Clean Fun to try, but I'm not optimistic at this point.
They're not bad, just not "me".
No real misses this month. What's sad is that the above is only a fraction of
what I've bought – I have so much stuff that I haven't yet worn/tried! And I
wonder why I'm so broke this week! Sheesh!

Hits:
Shi Kai Cucumber Melon shower gel. I already love the French Vanilla,
and the Cucumber Melon scent is great for when it's hot (which it
usually isn't, but the weather has been most cruel lately, with record
breaking highs and no fog! It royally sucks big time!!)
Smashbox Lip stain. Liquid stain (like the UD ones but on a wand rather
than a pen form), with a clear gloss on the other end. Lasting power is
excellent, and the color is great (they're numbered and I forget what
the # is, but it's a dark, brownish red–burgundy color).
MAC PowerPoint pencil in Permaplum. I'm late getting with these, but
finally got one. It is fab!! Great wear, smooooooth application. Will
definitely get more, eventually!
Glima tees! Every one I own is a hit.
The blue button–down top I got at Old Navy earlier this month. Has
shirring along the placket, and actually FITS (button down tops are so
hard for me to find, well, without gapping buttons at the chest,
anyway). Perfectly.
Misses:
Urban Decay Cream eyeshadow. I got the Midnight Cowboy shade, nothing
but the glitter in it shoes up, and it's too thin. Don't like!
The weather here – see above complaints regarding excessive heat and
lack of essential cooling fog. (Gee, if I wanted hot weather and no fog,
I wouldn't live in San Francisco, ya know!?
Not a hit, not a miss, just... eh:
Dove facial cleansing cloths (sensitive skin ones). They are just okay,
but the Olay ones were better IMHO. The Dove cleasner is harder to rinse
off. Will finish the box, won't buy again. I only use them when I'm too
tired to do my normal cleansing routine, so it'll be a while before
they're gone.
Kanebo sunscreens. I got 4 of these off eBay to try, all SPF50+ and all
PA+++: The Jell Water, the Sun ProGuard Milky Lotion, the Summer Shade
ExProtect and the Summer Shade clear sunscreen. The ExProtect, clear
sunscreen, and Jell Water are not bad, but IMHO none are quite as good
as Anessa. The Sun ProGuard Milky Lotion is my least favorite, it leaves
an incredible white cast on the skin, I mean really really obvious. (And
I am pretty pale!). I'm sticking with Anessa from here on out, I think.
Anthelios XL SPF60. also got on eBay from the seller in Spain. This one
feels way too heavy and greasy–feeling for everyday, but I might use it
if I was going to be in the sun all day, cause it feels like it stays on
really well. It took forever to absorb though.

Yes, it really is. You smear it all over and then add water. It gets
milky and soapy as soon as the water's added. It rinses completely

I'm going to join with my fellow Laurie in raving for the Deep
Cleansing Oil! KMS, your great love for it made an impression on me;
I obtained samples and used them with great success some time ago.
Finally got the full size in the mail last Wednesday and am loving it
before my mealy Dr. Hauschka cleansing cream. It really is great
stuff...though it's an oil, there's no "oil–slick" feeling and it
really gets the makeup off cleanly. It's tough on Illuminare EC and
MAC Tealproof, which sealed the deal for me. It also has a very
subtle "mountain girl" piney fresh scent...not like Pine–Sol, more
like a hint of soft, fresh needles.
*All the fun on topic threads on AF lately!!
Second that as well! So many great topics; I've gotten some wonderful
ideas for fall shoes and coats in particular.
My other Hits:
Revlon Sheerly Burgundy LipGlide Sheer––not a burgundy at all, though
I guess it could technically be called "burgundy lite," which just
sounds contradictory.
I like that it works with almost any color I have next to my face; it
seems to take on the warm or cool characteristics of different
fabrics.
Jane Iredale Babe Lip Sheer––this has quickly become my new favorite
cool berryish lip stain, and it feels like nothing on. Babe sounds
like it might describe a Barbie–like pink, but this isn't; it's
sophisticated, sheer–yet–buildable and easy to wear.
The new BBW Body Butter Skin Repairing Body Butter from the
Performance Body Care line. What a fabulous, decadent texture this
moisturizer has (and I've tried a lot of the heavy–duty ones)! It
comes in some of the classic BBW scents (Sweet Pea, Warm Vanilla sugar
and Coconut Lime Verbena, among others), but this goes beyond the
regular line in the quality of moisturizing (though admittedly this
rave is based on one use so far). I like that the scents are more
subtle than in the regular line; while I like WVS, it's ordinarily way
too sweet for me. It's perfect in the Performance Body Care line and
will complement my CSP Vanille Amande very nicely once we actually get
some cool weather.
No misses! Looking forward to September........Laurie B.
"Leilani" <v942–t...@dea.spamcon.org>
Mine didn't turn orange, but the scent of olive oil was so overwhelming that
I ended up throwing away my bottle. The stuff works, but it is thick and
left a residue on my face. In comparison, Shu Uemura's Cleansing Oil was a
lot thinner, had a pleasant eucalyptus scent, and rinsed off *ultra* clean.

Urban Decay Sold Out Face Case. I finally took the UD face case
plunge and so far I am loving this. It's so little and cute and the
colors are fun for evenings out. I wouldn't like this for an every
day look but it works for when I'm in the mood for something
different.
Nars Tanganyka lipstick. Another one of those "why did I wait so
long to get this?" I always thought this was too much like Nars
Gipsy (a staple in my lipstick rotation) but the Tanganyka is more
berry sheer on me and I think it will be great for the fall and
winter.
Misses:
Fekkai Glossing Cream. This is like the 3rd or 4th Fekkai product
that I've tried and I haven't liked any of them. I'll stick with
Bumble and Redken.
Jing Jang lip balm. A total waste of the 10 or 12 dollars I paid
for this. Sticking with Kiehl's for lip balm.
Maybe:
Clean Sweet Layer. Love the scent but it completely disappears on
my skin and I'm one of those who likes to actually smell the
fragrance a few hours after I apply.
MAC Powerpoint in Stubborn Brown. Great color but it doesn't last
on my eyes when it's hot and humid. I'll try it again this fall.

I don't remember most of what I bought this month :( Apparently, there
couldn't have been many hits.
Here's all I remember:
Hits:
A pair of navy nubuck Birkenstocks (Florida, three straps)
Dior Ultra Gloss in #851 (not as sticky as Chanel Glossimers, but
otherwise similar)
Aveda Confixor. I haven't used this in years but it's doing a
good job of smoothing out my curls
Misses:
Aveda Be Curly. Yes, it enhances the curls but it also makes them
frizzier and it seemed to make my hair limp and curly at
the same time.
Stacy
"Spud" <...@iinet.net.au>
Hits:
L'Oreal Liss control anti frizz cream, wonderful stuff and actually works!
Leaves hair very soft and no frizz.
Muster straightening iron slim line version. Having owned only a crappy
cheap straightener before this set really works and is fairly foolproof.
Guerlain Happiology moisturiser, lovely texture and I like the scent, my
skin is reacting well to it.
Guerlain lipstick 281 just happens to be a an excellent colour for me. Nice
texture and great staying power, has a similar scent to the ...
Guerlain Meteorites, very late to getting this. . Have given up on
foundation lately because my skin has been behaving and a light dusting with
powder or these is enough.
Guerlain (do we sense a theme this month?) kohl eyeliner in the turquoise
colour, had a bit of a job getting the hang of application but love it now.
Guerlain eyecream nice stuff, received a sample size and may purchase when
its gone.
Guerlain Samsara perfume– sample I quite like it.
Misses:
Manicare French Manicure pen.
This isn't a pen, it is just two polish bottles joined at the cap. It falls
over, it doesn't work on any level, the white is like typeout, it absolutely
sucks.
Guerlain Issima Mallow toner, I just don't like toner. Once again just a
sample.
Guerlain Issima Super Aquaserum– some hard to identify spray on hand or
body cream thingy (sample) sticky so even if it did something wonderful I
wont ever know because I can't get past the stickiness.
moonfa...@aol.com (MoonFancy)
Okay, I bought the J. Freida Dream Cream and Gold Rush just the other day, but
I already know my reviews about them.
LOVE the Dream Cream! It makes my dry, frizzy hair so *soft*! The curls dry
into perfect ringlets without that "crispy" feel. And I have discovered that I
don't need gel or mousse or any other sort of styling product when I use the
Dream Cream. I will be buying this again.
I did not like the Gold Rush. It feels like Vaseline to me. Plus, it doesn't
show up on my hair at all. I thought it would add sparkle, but I can't see it
all! –– Beckie

Whoa! I gotta go check this stuff out!

The Dream Cream is good. I like it a lot better than those shine
serums that are loaded with –icones. I do not like the smell of it
though, thankfully it doesn't last long. It's conditioning too, the
shine serums are not.

even better is Aveda Defining Whip, which amazingly doesn't have the
typical Aveda scent. it's very light, yet has quite a bit of control. it
doesn't get crunchy. it also looks like Noxema. weird, but I love it.

I did not like the Gold Rush. It feels like Vaseline to me. Plus, it doesn't
show up on my hair at all. I thought it would add sparkle, but I can't see it
all! –– Beckie
Beckie – do you apply the dream cream to wet/damp hair?
if so, do you let it air dry, or use a diffuser?
I have the Dream Cream myself, but I've always used it on dry hair after
blow drying it straight, but if it will help make my curly hair more
manageable, I will do whatever you say! =)

Danielle, the label says to use it on dry hair, which I did try and didn't
like. I use it right out of the shower while my hair is still pretty wet, comb
it through to distribute evenly, scrunch up my hair some, and then let it air
dry. I really am liking this stuff. It seems very moisturizing to me and
doesn't dry my hair out like other products have. I can't remember which AF'er
first mentioned this, but thank you! –– Beckie

Miss: The bag I bought at a flea market. It doesn't hold much...aaargh!
At least I didn't spend a lot on it and I'm really wondering *why* I didn't
check to see what would fit in it. Usually I do. My bad.

I've been eyeing a bag at eluxury, but haven't bought it for this reason, it
doesn't look like it'd hold all my stuff. Also, I carry shoulder bags and
although they're saying this is a shoulder bag, it doesn't have much of a drop.
I wish they had a larger bag with a longer strap in this stamped leather.

That is a beautiful bag. The width is only 2" though...that doesn't leave
room for an overstuffed wallet.

Diane, have you tried Redken's Lush Whip? If so, how would you compare
it to Aveda's Whip (which sounds awesome, BTW)?

I'll pick up some Lush Whip today to compare the two, in the interests
of science.
