Re: Replacing EL lipstick with drugstore (or just *less* expensive brand)

My MiL flew to Love Field here in DFW from Lubbock. She had only her
purse as a carry–on, and checked her over–nighter in at the gate (she's
staying for a week, but travels light –– in fact, half of her suitcase
space is reserved for library books she carries to read here!
Anyway, for security reasons, she had the small makeup bag with her
makeup/personal care items removed from her suitcase, likely because
of the nail file and clippers. So these were gone, but so were 3
lipsticks, some medication and other, minor grooming products. We've
been able to replace some of the items, but one of the items taken was
her EL Lipstick All Day Rich & Rosy. We could easily replace the EL
lippie with a trip to Dillard's or Foleys (or gloss.com, if necessary)
but she has expressed interest in replacing the lipstick she's worn for
the past 25+ years with a color–twin in a cheaper brand. Would anyone
in here be familiar enough with EL Rich and Rosy to rec a good
replacement? thxia, kayper
Kayper, I can't help with lipstick colors, but I would suggest that you contact
the Transportation Security Administration. Nail files and nail clippers,
which they deemed as a hazard in her checked luggage (and wtf is up with that?)
are indeed allowable––in fact, they're allowable in *carryon* luggage. See
http://www.tsa.gov/public/interapp/tsa_policy/tsa_policy_0010.xml
I would call the airport and ask to speak with the security customer service
person to see about restitution for those items and retraining for the security
personnel.
(I can't imagine why those items were yanked from checked luggage when you can
check knives and swords.)

Also, it is illegal to confiscate prescription drugs.
I had a nail clipper taken once, but the long, diamond type nail file I
had was OK . . . *that* could have done some damage, but the nail
clippers were pretty useless as weapons.

Was there the tiny blade part? If so, they would be, if not they let them
stay.

Yes, but I don't understand why they'd take the clippers and leave
the file – it makes *no* sense.

There may be standardized rules but they vary greatly from airport to
airport. In Fresno every person
is searched with the wand Every suitcase is opened, and the contents are
checked. In other cities
this is not the case. In MT I asked about files and crochet hooks and was
told it was fine to carry them.
They have greater concerns about the amount of weapons people take with them
for their hunting trips.
In MT my suitcases were checked closed and the handpainted saw we brought
home was not a problem.
I don't think it would have made it out of the Fresno airport. Salt Lake is
another airport with stricter
rules than SF or Washington/Dulles.

I have never flown anywhere, so bear with what may sound like a stupid comment.
But I just don't understand this. They *take* things away? And don't give
them back?? I've had to check swiss army knives in certain high–security
buildings, but I always got them back.
My internal self–righteousness is recoiling in horror.

No kidding. She needs to report this to the police and airport security for
the airlines.

Yes, we tried to encourage her to call the number and DH went to the
website (I think) but she said she'd rather get back and do it
face–to–face with whomever made the decision to yank it in the first
place. We tried to explain that there might not be anybody on–site (in
Lubbock) who could deal with the situation directly, but I really think
she'll just let it slide. She's mad, but she hates confrontation,
really. She's already managed an Rx refill here, through her Doc and
our pharmacist (nothing of high priority, thank goodness.) Thx all for
the info, though. We've also decided that she would purchase certain
items *here* and then leave them for her visits. kayper

I don't know what the specifics of the situation might have been.
She didn't carry the items onboard, and what danger a pair of nail–
clippers or nail file would have been in the cargo hold is beyond
my understanding. Perhaps she could ask for it back when she gets
home? It's a small airport; perhaps just describing the bag and
it's contents would be enough, provided they didn't toss it immediately.

Oh yeah. . there was an article in the Pittsburgh Post–Gazette about
a WWII vet who won a Medal of Honor and it came in a box with a small
penknife I believe. He was flying somewhere to be a speaker and they
confiscated the whole box, including his Medal. Big whoop about it. It
was a sad article because the guy was I believe 89.
Back onto topic though. . I would recommend taking the MiL shopping to
an Ulta or close "good" drugstore. Have her check out Revlon and
L'oreal and see what she likes. . .She'd be able to pick the color
better than anyone, or even find a new color that she likes.

Rich and Rosy and Rosa Rosa are two of my favorite EL shades! Rosa
Rosa I have found some close replacements. On the Rich and Rosy I
have not been so lucky. I have taken the tube to the store and felt
that I found a close match and got home put it on and within one hour
it was obvious that it was just....different and slightly orange. At
least it appeared to be on me more than once. Plus the EL stays on the
lips nicely. I would love to hear if anyone has any suggestions and
how the replacement works on your MIL. Please post the results!

Oh, and haven't I tried!! She is a homebody delux, regardless of
whose home it is! I haven't been pushy about it, but the couple of
times I suggested it she said it wasn't worth bothering with. I'm
not complaining, though. She is a joy to be around, whether she has
lipstick on or not. kayper

Yes. I lost a pair of round–tip manicure scissors and tweezers to an airport
security person and had to buy new ones at my destination.
What the heck are they doing with these stockpiled grooming implements and
how can tweezers be used as weapons?!?
