Just finished WHITE TEETH, by Zadie Smith. Great writing, but a pointless
story with characters I cared nothing about. It could have been much better
with a competent editor.
Now enjoying THE BOOK OF SALT. It's fabulous so far! It grabbed me from the
opening page. It's fiction about a Vietnamese cook in Paris who works in for
Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas. Great premise.

Oh no... I have White Teeth on my bookshelf waiting to be read together with
a few other books. Why was this author the toast of the town?

Evie, I thought it was an excellent book but you need to be involved with
the characters to
appreciate the plot.

i really liked it. i just found smith's style of writing to be slightly
different from the norm.

I actually loved the writing style, and her scope for the story is incredible.
I just thought it was 150 pages longer than it should have been, and I just
couldn't get into the characters. I mean, they were interesting all right, but
I didn't LIKE them or particularly care what happened to them. In fact, the
most interesting characters got the shortest shrift –– the lesbian niece, Abdul
the pub owner, Magid (didn't see or understand enough of him at all).
Of course, as always, YMMV.

I'm reading The Little Friend, by Donna Tartt. It had a slow start, but it's
really building up. I'm looking forward to finishing it!
