Mom's Kick–A** Makeover

"Stephanie K." <corio...@shore.net>
x–no–archive: yes
As some of you might recall, last fall my Mom had a very rough time
getting through major surgery (an aorta bypass –– ugh!). Now, 9 months
later, she is playing 18 holes of golf and kicking butt! Last week she
came to visit along with my sister. We had a girls retreat and went on a
duck tour of Boston that was a ton o' fun.
Then, on to makeup! Mom arrived with blue shadow on her lids apparently
oblivious to the fact that blue shadow + pink/red skin tone = purple
bruising effect. So, naturally, I was compelled to perform a quick
makeover. This is what I did. I also bought her all of the items used,
wrote out directions and made her throw out her mishmash of ancient
(read: rancid) makeup.
1. Olay Provital tinted moisture
2. MAC Studiofix pressed powder
3. Maybelline brow pencil, blended (I tidied up her brows first, of
course, with my trusty Tweezerman's –– much prefer the Garden Botanika
granite brow pencil but it's gone to discontinued heaven, uhm, or is it
h–e–double–hockey–sticks?)
3. MAC Yogurt under brow
4. MAC Espresso as powder liner on top lash line and 1/3 outer bottom
5. Curled lashes (at age 70 she got an autographed Petite Lashpro for
ease of use)
6. Max Factor Lashfinity black mascara on top only
7. Applied new lipstick
8. Spritzed air with new summer fragrance and made her walk through mist
9. Made her make an appointment for polish change (We had new
manicures/pedicures before the makeover–– she chose a screamingly bright
pink frosty polish.)
For tools and "extras" I got her:
MAC 266 Small Angle Brush
MAC Small Matte Eye Shadow in Plumage (as another powder liner choice)
MAC Blot Film
MAC Cream Nail Polish in Scarlet O' (no more sparkly bright pink fingers
& toes), MAC MV1Fragrance (so much better than heavy, cloying Moshimo)
MAC Amplified Creme Lipstick in Craving (no more sparkly bright pink
lips)
L'Oreal concealer brush
Revlon brow brush/comb combo
Aromatherapy votive candles (4)
Sticky notes for mascara brush prep(!)
In all, the quick makeover really brightened her look, especially the
"open" eyes, and complemented her skin tone. She was thrilled. I was
thrilled. My sister was thrilled. The moral here is to have fun with
your Mom while she still graces the earth with her presence. I held her
hand like a 5 year old walking down Newbury street :–)

Echo, echo, echo. I should have read the other posts before posting so I
could give an original comment. ;)
Steph, you are an uber daughter.

Wow, I've tried to help my Mom in the same way, in little ways,
to see if I could help her looks, but the only thing she was
willing to change was her face cream.
But, hey; if she's decided she's old enough to wear purple
with a red hat that doesn't suit her, well then, who am I
to intervene? kayper

Your story brought back memories of when I used to do my moms makeup at
age79. I am happy to have those memories as she passed away from leukemia at
age 81. Treasure the times you can yet share with your moms.....Kathy

Oh, Stephanie, I love this story. I used to do my mother's makeup when I
was a
teen. I'm always buying her skincare stuff but I can't get to change her
makeup
from the way she's been wearing it for the last 30 years or so. She's
still
upset that Revlon discontinued Touch and Glow.
I like the idea of giving her a tinted moisturizer and powder. That she
might
actually try. Who makes a really light, pleasant pressed powder?
