Beauty Confessions

moonfa...@aol.com (MoonFancy)
I have a "beauty confession" to make.
I have read countless tips and articles about how to tweeze eyebrows and, yes,
I have a TweezerMan...
....but I don't tweeze my eyebrows. I don't do anything to them. It's not that
I don't HAVE eyebrows, but they are so light and, to me, they just don't look
very terrible as they are. So I rarely mess with them.
Do y'all have any Beauty Confessions to make? –– Beckie, who will probably
think of more confessions soon....

Well, we have the same confession here: I can count on my fingers the
number of times a year I actually pluck anything out. They aren't messy
or oddly shaped (though they could use a *little* more arch than they
have naturally) and I don't even need to groom them. They stay pretty
much the same all the time, and they're the right size for my eyes.
My *biggest* confession: I almost never wear a sunscreen all over.
In fact, I use it on my face only occasionally. A couple of foundations
have a built–in UVA ingredient, but the more common UVA ingredient,
titanium dioxide, causes such a breakout I look as if I had chicken
pox. As I've read Paula Begoun's writing, I've realized she addresses
those who are primarily trying to lessen the lines they already have
and/or prevent more. I've come to realize that that particular skincare
issue doesn't motivate me. I'm am not worried about getting lines
or wrinkles eventually. I am careful to wear as much protection on
my face as I can when I know I'm going to be outside for awhile (and
this includes the sunglasses and caps.) But in the long run, it's
really more to take care of my moles; all my family are "mole–y"
people, and I know that that only increases the risk of skin cancer.
I'm *much* more careful with my daughter. She gets coated in a
white, thick broad spectrum sunblock, reapplied often. She still
gets dark (must be a genetic thing, though she didn't get it from
*me*.) One of these days, she'll have gorgeous skin and will
thank me for it. kayper

I don't either. I am not even sure if the moisturizers and makeup I use on my
face contain them. I know I should worry more about this. (At least I don't
tan on purpose any more.)

I didn't realize Miami was #1 skin cancer locale, but I suppose it's not
surprising. When I lived in So Fla, the only way to avoid a tan was to stay
indoors all day, and who want's to do that. You couldn't even find a

I rarely use moisturizer! I have oily, almost greasy skin. I never use
lotions, not even in the winter hardly. I only use them to layer scent, like a
scented body creme with an EDT. I use Clinique 3 Step Skincare and I am sure

I hate wearing sunscreen and makeup. I don't mind slapping on Anessa 50+++ and
a baseball cap when I'm out on the weekends, in the park, etc. But I rely on
my moisturizer (Total Effect, Regenerist or DDF––all SPF 15) to do the job when
really I should be wearing a much higher SPF, especially now that it's hot and
sunny in London.

Oh, say, such as bust toning/firming products. I can't help myself. I'm really

Our UV index is typically around 12–14, whereas NYC is about 4. Our TV
and newspaper reporters always write stories about the sad #1 ranking,
and derms frequently appear on TV with warnings, updates on latest
sunscreens, etc.
I try to not go out between 10–3, the worst hours for the UVA rays.

I wrote recently that although I slather on sunscreen, I didn't think
about my hair, and since the windows on my car aren't tinted
(schedulted for this week), the left side of my hair is bleaching out
platinum. I put on sunscreen even if it's raining, since the rays are
always there, and I keep the drapes on the south side of my house
closed (they're light and brightly–colored, so the filtered light is
beautiful.)

Forgive me, a.f., for I have sinned. I go to bed without removing my makeup

YOU have beauty confessions to make. I will contribute just to be *polite*.
;)
*I always cut my cuticles
*I also always razor the callouses from the bottom of my feet (so much faster
to do that once every week or two – much less work than using my Diamoncel
file)
*don't pay enough attention to sunscreen
(ok – so I rarely use it – depending on my foundation and makeup to act as a
physical barrier – and I don't sit out in the sun – but always wear sunglasses,
year round thanks to having light blue eyes that are very sun sensitive)
*I, too, clean my ears with q–tips (dipped in alcohol – had an ear infection
once, but not since starting this practice)
*I don't tweeze or shape my brows very often (I can't see them very well – they
are blonde)
However, I need to add that thanks to AF I have corrected a few transgressions:
*I continue to buy lots of products in every category (but make much more
informed decisions in this area) but now I actually USE the products
*I play a lot more with my makeup instead of thinking there is only one *right*
way for me to look
*I have learned how to better care for my skin – the proper use of AHAs, BHAs,
etc. for MY skin – and I use the info I have learned
But most important of all – I tend to be a lurker. I realize that I have
learned so much about so many things by those of you on this group who are so
willing to share of yourselves. I am making an effort to do the same, maybe
someone will find something that I have experienced to be of value.

I've heard that powder based makeup or pencils can be kept forever if
they're stored in a cool dark place. So I do. That's my confession
#1. I've cleared out a LOT in the last 6 months and cut back on
buying new products but I still have alot that I don't wear regularly,
but I can't bring myself to toss it.
I don't use the Diamoncel on my feets often enough.
I don't pluck my brows regularly and I really should. They are on the
thick–ish side but need a bit of shaping.
I slap makeup on in the car entirely too often and don't take the time
to put in on properly at home. This I'm trying to get better about
(really).
I have so many shower gels that I'll probably take all this lifetime
and then the next to use them up. AND that doesn't even count whatever
I'm going to succumb to in the future. I gave a bunch away a few
weeks ago and still have entirely too many.
What I DO is wear sunscreen day in, day out, cloudy or sunny.
Incidental exposure adds up. UVA and UVB rays can penetrate cloud
cover. My father has had melanoma and I feared I had it too when I
had a mole removed 12 years ago (I didn't, thank god). As EMD would
say, The End.

Thanks Vicki...I think it is my right as a human being helping another human
being to be honest with people. And I don't think any boss could argue with me
when the company just doesn't carry what a customer might be looking for, which
is usually the only time I will send them elsewhere or recommend something
else. For example, we have *no* foundations, concealers, or powders light
enough for me to wear; in a year I have only come across two customers who have
had the same predicament. I didn't feel one bit badly about telling them some
items that might work for them – I'm not going to make them buy something
horribly wrong for them, and they're going to keep looking, so why not help
them out a little? Nothing lamer than an SA trying to insist a product is
right for you when it isn't!! I hate brainwashed SAs.
What I would totally be busted for, and what I don't do, is if I recommended
products from another line but which we also carried (ie blue eyeshadow, red
lipstick) because of a specific preference for one over the other...that's
different.
OT more: I don't wear enough sunscreen, even though I would like to. Nothing
works for me. Chemicals turn me red and irritated but TiO2's clog up my pores.
Sigh. (Suggestions always welcome!)

Hey Vicki, thank you so much for the idea! I'll have to check out the Ocean
Potion – white cast isn't really an issue since it usually looks pretty normal
on my skin!! If it doesn't irritate you and you have some sunscreen issues, it
is definitely worth my checking. Thanks!!

Forgive me, a.f., for I have sinned. I go to bed without removing my
makeup most of the time. When I first started reading a.f., I began
a nightly regimen of cleansing, exfoliating, toning, moisturizing,
etc. My skin appears to be just as healthy now except I don't get
milia anymore. For me, less is definitely more. Go figure.

I'm a less–is–more type, too. I can't stand heavy foundation or
moisturizer, mainly make do with barely tinted Lancôme BeinFait.
I don't "do" my eyebrows as often as I probably should, and *never*
wear red lipstick or nail polish.
I do, however, scrub my face every night.

I *so* hate to be preachy (especially in this wonderfully confessional

and you will be *healed*! (must be read with Earnest Angely emphasis)

– I don't cut my cuticles, but I don't push them back very often,
either.
Actually, I've found that when I leave them alone, they tend to stay
neater,
whereas if I start pushing them back, they get a little ragged from
the scraping. I know I should push gently, but I just ain't got that
kind of patience. So, it's best if I leave them alone and let them do
their own thing.
Aha, so I'm not the only one who has experienced this. I thought I was crazy,
but every time I make a commitment to really groom the heck out of my nails and
start faithfully pushing my cuticles back, they look worse. I just leave them
in peace now, too.
My other big beauty sin is digging at blemishes. Experience should have taught
me by now that it almost always ends up looking worse. But not always, and I
guess that's why I keep doing it. Sometimes I manage to smooth out a zit
before it gets bigger.
But other than these things, I'm pretty righteous.

I'm a face–picker. I can't bear the feeling of a bump. But I've
learned that there are two kinds of bumps: One has a hard, waxy white
core, sometimes startlingly deep. This sort I *have* to squeeze, or it
will simply never go away. Furthermore, I have to get *all* of the core
out before it will fade. The other sort doesn't have any core to it,
and if I squeeze it I just make it worse, whereas if I leave it alone
and put BHA toner on it, it will often just fade away.
The hard part is knowing which sort a zit is before I start squeezing.
Either way, squeezing leave a red scar for a while, but if it's the kind
that simply won't go away otherwise, it's worth it. But it's a shame to
mess my face up worse for the sort that will go away on its own.

Do y'all have any Beauty Confessions to make? –– Beckie, who will probably
think of more confessions soon....
Argh, I've been following this thread and now I feel the need to 'fess
up. My beauty confessions:
– I pay my stylist lots of money to care for my tempermental hair. I
consider this a both a guilty pleasure and a necessity, though,
because he's one of the few stylists I know that is both talented and
businesslike, and he really knows how to handle my hair...In the
beginning, I was a bit lax in keeping up with the products he uses,
but now I pay close attention so I know what my hair likes. That way,
if he ever decides to up and move to another state like my former
stylist did, I can tell a new stylist exactly what works best on my
hair.
– I spend too much time and too many ducats on my feet. Foot care
products are my latest obsession; I can safely say my interest in foot
files, scrubs, soaks, masks, lotions, paraffin wax, nail polish, etc.
is getting totally out of hand (no pun intended)... I was soaking my
feet every night, but then I read an article that advised not to,
saying that since the feet don't have oil glands, soaking every night
could dry them out. So now I wash them every night and soak them once
a week.
– I pack too many items in my makeup bag. Yesterday, the zipper broke
and the cosmetics tumbled into every corner of my purse. Not a pretty
sight. This is either a sign to cut down on the number of items, or
buy a bigger makeup bag. Um, I say biggher bag :–)
Whew! I feel better now. Confession is a good thing... :–)

=i get my brows threaded every few months or so, and i don't touch them other
than that. no tweezing, no grooming, nothing.
=i shave my legs below the knee only, and i use whatever body wash i'm using.
no shaving cream; didn't know i 'need' it!
=i don't care if my face looks a little shiny from sunblock. i wear spf 50 head
to toe every day, rain or shine, and not all sunblock is completely matte, and
i just don't care.
=didn't know what a 'bikini line' was until i was in my mid–twenties; it's not
a problem for me and i assumed it had something to do with a stomach tan line.

I shave WAY less in the winter than in the summer.
I paid no attention to my eyebrows until I got smaller glasses.
I don't use sunscreeen on an everyday basis. I use it when I'm in the
sun. I don't consider it necessary for going from the parking lot into
the store, and back again. In fact, I think the dire warnings about
using sunscreen have gotten a little too dire. IMO some sun is good for
you. 5–10 minuts a day.
I can't sustain a skin care regimen for more than two weeks––so I have
no idea if any of them would work on me.
I never drink 8 glasses of water a day, though I do ingest a lot of
liquids. A recent study (cited on AF) claimed that you could include
ALL your liquid intake in that 8 glass a day recommendation, so that
made me feel better.
I don't take vitamins. I don't exercise.
Of course, I also don't look 20 years younger than I am . . . .

I drink way more water than I probably need, take my vits, use sunscreen
almost always, but too often I don't wash my face in the evening and neglect
my eyes when it comes to makeup.

Okay, it's an old thread now, but I'll play:
During the week, I'm a fashion train wreck. I run the office of a manufacturing
company, so rarely see the public. My hair (shoulder length, blunt cut) is
always worn back, I wear no makeup, and I'm always in Levi's, tennies, and a
tank top, t–shirt, or sweater, depending on the weather. I get ready for work
in about 10 minutes. :)
Weekends, though, I wear all my cute clothes, and do makeup and hair. People
who know me from work, then run in to me somewhere over the weekend, always do a
double–take. Guess I look quite different. LOL
I don't have a fancy skin care regimen. I wash my face with soap and water. I
have used the same moisturizer w/sunscreen for 10 years. Nuetrogena Healthy
Skin w/Retinol and SPF 15. I am often told that I look to be in my
mid–twenties, and I'm 37, so I guess no harm done so far.
I go to bed with my makeup on (weekends) all the time.
Hardly ever have professional manicures or pedicures. Do it myself. Will go in
for a cuticle cleanup and foot buffing about twice a year.
I guess I just don't have the patience or time to be a fashion diva. I'm into
riding my horses and other outdoor stuff, and fashion/beauty stuff often takes a
backseat to my hobbies. Although I do read the fashion mags and stuff to stay
updated.
Okay, that's enough confession for one day.

I have read countless tips and articles about how to tweeze eyebrows and, yes,
