What I find most amusing is that the people taking very hardline stances are
all saying "I didn't watch the show, but..."
IMO, the larger discussion of stereotypes is perfectly valid even if you
haven't seen the show. The discussion isn't whether the stereotypes on the
show are good or bad; for that, yes, one would have needed to see the show in
order to evaluate it. The discussion is whether a show which taps into
stereotypes about 2 groups is appropriate or desirable.
FWIW, while on one had I think that just about everyone who watches the show
sees that there are 2 types set in an artifical setting, I also completely take
Joe's point about all stereotypes being bad, even the "good" ones, because they
don't allow you to focus on the individual (and that group focus, IMO, is what
leads to prejudice). And I can also see, now that I think about it, that
stereotypes, even "good" ones, can be used to further marginalize (in this case
by trivializing by associating with a makeover) a particular group.
