Cosmetics manufacturers to give away $175 mil in free cosmetics

Leslie <lbit...@SpamIsEviLworldnet.att.net>
Cosmetics firms plan $175 million giveaway, Free products part of
price–fixing
settlement, Bob Egelko, Chronicle Staff Writer, Saturday, July 19, 2003
It figures to be a rush the likes of which the nation's cosmetics
counters have never seen: a $175 million giveaway of top–label perfumes,
lipsticks and other adornments to anyone who's bought them in the last
nine years.
It's part of a settlement by cosmetics manufacturers and retailers of a
price–fixing suit, originally filed five years ago in Marin County and
updated and refiled as
a nationwide class action Friday in U.S. District Court in San
Francisco. There's also a $24 million bauble for a flock of plaintiffs'
lawyers.

From what I read (Chron article this morning), the companies are being
allowed to formulate special products for the settlement giveaway. If they
are smart they will try to pass off really inexpensive products (who knows
if they will be decent or worthless), so I'm not impressed yet. I have
purchased cosmetics/skincare/fragrances from almost all the defendents
within the specified time period. I'm sure many other AF'ers have, too. I'm
surprised there isn't more discussion about this on AF.

I foresee a lot of GWP lipsticks being given away. Milano Tile, anyone?

We might not have our receipts, but we have the "what I bought today" thread.
Many of us can estimate what we spent on the brands in question using old
posts. Unfortunately, it'd be hearsay. Still, it doesn't seem right that
AFers can only get one item as compensation. Shouldn't we constitute another
class?

They probably contain secret ingredients that cause the giveaway
recipients to come back and buy large quantities at full price.

hmmm....do they choose what they give away, or does the customer? Is it per
retailer/per store?

they choose what to give away. they haven't worked out the details as to
how/what/where yet. remember, this all still requires the approval of a
judge before it can happen. (although it shouldn't be a problem)

I can just imagine what you'd get if Microsoft had to choose what to
give away... Microsoft Bob 2.0, anyone? <grin/duck>

Hmmm, just wondering if the judge has to be out of the class.
