How about an Alienware Area–51M?
Alienware blows away anything from Dell.
And besides, you don't have to listen to people say, "You've got a
Dell!" like their former ad guy! <grin/duck>

Toshiba laptops are great.

It really depends on what you're going to use it for and what you're
looking for (size, weight, screen, etc.); generally the smaller you
get, the more expensive you get (if cost is an issue). Have you
checked out the Tablet PC? Lots of flexibility and handwriting
capability – it rocks! : ) There are a number of suppliers/resellers
out there, here is an example of one:

More information on the Tablet overall:

I use a baby Dell (company laptop) on my wireless home network, which
is working out well. It's a small form factor and very light, which
is important if you travel a lot. : )

I'll have to disagree about the Alienware thing – Alienware notebooks
are more desktop replacements than laptops. They use desktop processors
so they drain your batteries like no other and they produce an
incredible amount of heat. I reccomend against them. Oh, and alienware
doesn't even make them. I forget the name of teh company that makes them
– but I would expect you'd save some money if you bought from the
company that makes them (which I know you can)......
Anyways – enough with the alienware rant...
Right now I'm shopping for a laptop for myself. The things that I value
the very most are battery life and size/weight. Many of the Sony Vaio
laptops are very small and lightweight, many of those also have
excellent battery lifes. Toshiba makes some very nice laptops. Apple
makes nice laptops if you're into the whole counter culture apple thing
(I personally am not – but I will admit that their laptops are nice)
Compaq has put out a nice laptop or two – same with HP. Most Dells that
I've looked at have been *very* unattractive – and most are rather
largish.
But really – what you need to do when choosing a laptop is decide what
you are going to be doing with this computer, how often you will be
traveling with it, etc. I'll be traveling a ton – so I want a small
laptop. Perhaps you are only looking for a desktop replacement.
Everyone's a little different.

I have a Dell Inspiron 2650, and like it. The only thing I dislike is
that it gets *really* hot, to the point where I have to use a lap
desk. The laptop I had before this one didn't do that, but it is no
longer made.

the biggest B you ever met behind your back.

I have a HP laptop, it's not bad, I've had it for about a year and no
problems with it except for the fact that it also gets really hot after
using it for about 4 hours. The mousepad also sometimes has a mind of it's
own:) Debbie
My husband just got an HP, the one with a big screen. I've used it a few
times. I thought of getting that, but my son keeps saying get a Dell, so I
thought I'd put it out there for people that actually have them. My husband
has only had his for a month or two. Seems the Dell gets hot too. I think
I want to get the external mouse so I can use that if I choose.

The "wimpy laptop" even has a fan on it to blow away the heat.

IIRC, most laptops have a PS/2 type port on the back for an
desktop–type external mouse and/or keyboard.

The Dell's from Texas... of course it's gonna get hot!
Also, speaking of Dell, they are going to drop the "Computer" from

Maybe they can buy and fix McDonald's.... and "gonna getta Dell" will

A couple of considerations:
1) First and foremost be sure you're compatible with who you need to be
compatible with. There's nothing worse than having the only Mac in a PC
shop or vice versa.
2) Give serious thought to where and how you'll be using it. if you're
primarily an on–the–go user, and will be using your laptop at cafes, on
planes, in the car, and will be lugging it hours a day, you really do want
one of the more compact models. The last thing you need is a 17" monitor
and excess lbs of computing horsepower.
On the other hand, If you just expect to shuttle back and forth between two
or three locations, and will typicaly have a desk to work at, the larger
monitors and keyboards on larger notebooks are nice. And of course, a
bigger monitor is a plus for watching DVDs or streaming video.
If possible, borrow someone else's laptop for a day or two.

My favourite ones are the Sony VAIO ones...fantastic! And remember to
get one with 512Mb RAM instead of 256, makes a big difference,
especially if you are going to process any video.

I will be getting 512 mb of RAM and a 2.6 GHz. I've had a Sony Vaio before,
so will be trying something new. Thanks, Vanessa.
