I've always had success with airing clothing out in direct sunlight. For
some reason, direct sunlight seems to be the critical factor.

That's not the best thing to do to leather though, maybe try the dry
cleaners instead.

I agree, sunlight is not a good idea for leather.
Dry cleaning is a very expensive alternative for leather items, but it
might be your only choice. I know here (NYC) it's $60 (and up) to
clean leather pants.

Direct sunlight will fade leather and speed up any chemical reactions that
cause drying, cracking, deterioration, etc. Hang it in a shaded, airy spot
(on the back porch?), on a hefty hanger that will hold the front from the
back, perhaps even stuffing the sleeves with tissue. Or, if you have an
ozone–emitting air cleaner, put it in a small, closed room with said air
cleaner running. THis is the technology used by commercial firms that come
in and clean up and sanitize after a fire.
